Scientific Programmers or Postdocs – Earth System Modeling

Germany, Hamburg

JOB DESCRIPTION

The Max Planck Institute for Meteorology (MPI-M) is a multidisciplinary center for climate and Earth system research located in Hamburg, Germany. MPI-M contributes to the BMBF project «From the Last Interglacial to the Anthropocene: Modeling a Complete Glacial Cycle» (PalMod), which aims at simulating the climate from the peak of the last interglacial up to the present using
comprehensive Earth System Models.

With respect to this research project, we have open positions for 2 Scientific Programmers or Postdocs (f/m).

1. Position Land:
Implementation of processes related to changes in land-sea mask and surface orography during the last glacial cycle in the land surface model JSBACH. The successful candidate will contribute to the implementation of the dynamic interface between JSBACH and other components of the MPI Earth System Model, including interactive hydrological discharge (HD) model, models of formation of periglacial lakes and wetlands, as well as implementation of changes in terrestrial carbon storage and vegetation cover due to land-sea mask changes. For further information on the job description, please contact Victor Brovkin (victor.brovkin(at)mpimet.mpg.de).

2. Position Ocean:
Implementation of processes related to changes in land-sea mask and ocean topography changes during the last glacial cycle in the ocean general circulation model MPIOM. The successful candidate will contribute to the implementation of the dynamic interface between MPIOM and other components of the MPI Earth System Model, including coupling to an interactive ice sheet model and the investigation of the response of the climate system to topography changes during the last deglaciation.
For further information on the job description, please contact Uwe Mikolajewicz (uwe.mikolajewicz(at)mpimet.mpg.de).

DESIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

Requirements:

  • experience in modelling physical processes on a global or large-regional scale;
  • familiarity with coding and running computer models, very good programming skills in FORTRAN (on a UNIX platform) and scripting;
  • strong motivation and ability to carry out model development in an interdisciplinary and international environment.
  • knowledge of the MPI Earth System Model would be of advantage

Subject to funding, the position is offered for two years starting at September 1, 2015. Payment will be in accordance with experience following the German public service positions (TVoeD E13/14), which include extensive social security plans. The conditions of employment, including upgrades and duration, follow
the rules of the Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Sciences and those of the German civil service.

The Max Planck Institute for Meteorology seeks to increase the number of female scientist and encourages them to apply. Handicapped persons with comparable qualifications receive preferential status.
