UK Ofgem unveils a €44bn green investment plan for 2021-2026
10 Dec 2020The UK energy regulator has approved a £40bn (€44.3bn) investment plan for 2021-2026, which seeks to improve the country’s gas and electricity transmission and distribution infrastructure and to deliver emissions-free green energy. Compared to a July 2020 proposal, the parastatal increased upfront spending on infrastructure by £5bn (€5.5bn) to £30bn (€33.2bn) and granted additional funding of £10bn (€11.1bn) for future green energy projects.

10 Dec 2020According to the Climate Change Committee (CCC), an independent advisory committee, the United Kingdom should cut its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 78% in 2035 compared to 1990 levels to reach net zero emissions by 2050. In June 2019, the United Kingdom adopted a law with an objective to reach net-zero emission by 2050 and the country recently announced its target to reduce its GHG emissions by 68% by 2030, compared to 1990 levels, up from a previous NDC target of 53%.

9 Dec 2020Australia has abandoned its plan to use Kyoto carryover credit to achieve its remissions reduction targets. The country received carryover credits as Australia exceeded its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction target for the first Kyoto period (2008-2012) and the projected overachieved for Kyoto 2 (2013-2020). The surplus could have been counted towards Australia’s commitment to the 2015 Paris agreement. Australia’s NDC aims to reduce GHG emissions to 26-28% below 2005 levels by 2030.

9 Dec 2020The state government of Andhra Pradesh (south-eastern India) has launched a tender for 6.4 GW for solar projects to be developed in 10 locations in the state, including 600 MW at Chakrayapet, 400 MW at Thondur, 600 MW at Kambaldinne, 600 MW at Pendlimarri, 600 MW at Rudrasamudram, 600 MW at CS Puram, 600 MW at Uruchinatala, 1,200 MW at Akmbadur, 600 MW at Mudigubba, and 600 MW at Kolimigundala. To do so, Andhra Pradesh has created create an affiliate of its AP Power Generation Corporation, named Andhra Pradesh Green Energy Corporation.

US EIA expects a 11% decrease in energy-related CO2 emissions in 2020
10 Dec 2020According to US Energy Information Administration, the country’s crude oil production is expected to fall by 910,000 bbl/d in 2020 to 11.3 mb/d (-7.4% compared with the 2019 average). The previous forecast anticipated an 860,000 bbl/d drop. In 2021, US crude oil output is expected to decline further (-1.8%) to reach 11.1 mb/d. US petroleum and other liquid fuel consumption should decline by 2.38 mb/d to 18.16 mb/d in 2020.

CFE will invest US$3.2bn to add 4.3 GW of gas-fired capacity in Mexico
10 Dec 2020The Mexican state-owned power utility Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE) plans to invest MXN62.8bn (US$3.2bn) between 2021 and 2025 to build 6 CCGT power plants and 5 aero-derivative units with a total capacity of 4,347 MW, including 1,714 MW to supply Baja California and 1,547 MW to supply Yucatan. The projects are expected to improve the country’s energy security, solving the energy shortage in the two peninsulas.

10 Dec 2020The German and Norwegian power transmission system operators (TSOs) TenneT and Statnett have put the 1.4 GW NordLink interconnector between Germany and Norway into trial operations. The €1.5-2bn interconnection project comprises a bipolar high-voltage direct current (HVDC) subsea interconnector, which will spread across 623 km between Wilster in Schleswig-Holstein (Germany) and Tonstad (Norway). Once fully tested and commissioned in the spring 2021, the 525 kV line will enable Germany to import hydropower surplus from Norway, while Norway will import German wind and solar surplus.

10 Dec 2020The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has started discussing with its partners in Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) to add an 8th train to the Bonny gas liquefaction plant, which is currently composed of 6 trains with a total capacity of 22 Mt/year (29.7 bcm/year). NLNG is a company made up of NNPC (49%), Shell (25.6%), Total (15%) and Eni (10.4%).

10 Dec 2020The Czech government may delay a tender to build a new 1.2 GW unit at the Dukovany nuclear power plant, which was initially expected to be launched by the end of 2020. The country is currently discussing whether to exclude Rosatom and China General Nuclear Power (CGNPC) to take part to the auction due to security concerns.

10 Dec 2020The Council for the Development of Cambodia has awarded a final registration certificate to Botum Sakor Energy to develop a 700 MW (2×350 MW) coal-fired power project in Thmar Sor commune, in the Botum Sakor district of the Koh Kong province. In November 2020, Botum Sakor Energy, an affiliate of Cambodian conglomerate Royal Group, signed a contract with the Chinese company Sinosteel Engineering & Technology for the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) of the project. The U$1bn project is expected to take 4 years to develop and full commercial operations are planned in 2024.
