Turkey plans to tender 1 GW of solar capacity in early 2021

Turkey has decided to launch 74 solar energy mini tenders with a total capacity 1,000 MW spread across 36 different regions, for its Renewable Energy Resources Zones (YEKA) before the end of March 2021.

Turkey aims to produce 50% of its electricity from renewables by 2023 (up from 44% in 2019). Solar accounts for around 7% of Turkey’s installed capacity, with 6 GW. In 2017, through YEKA scheme, Turkey’s 1,000 MW solar tender accepted a winning bid price of TRY51.24/MWh (US$6.99/MWh).

Malaysia delays B20 biodiesel mandate in transport sector to 2022

Malaysia has delayed the mandate to roll out biofuel with a 20% palm oil component (known as B20) for the transport sector by about six months to early 2022. Malaysia Biomass Initiatives (MBI) was launched in 2011 to develop and promote palm oil. In 2011 Malaysia launched its B5 biodiesel programme, blending 5% palm oil-based biodiesel with 95% diesel. The share of biodiesel was raised to 7% in 2014 under the B7 Programme (applicable to the industrial sector as of February 2019) and then to 10% under the B10 mandate in February 2019.

South Korea’s updated NDC targets 24.4% GHG emissions cut by 2030

South Korea has updated its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The updated target is to reduce the total national greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 24.4% by 2030, from their 2017 level (709.1 MtCO2eq), i.e. limiting national GHG emissions to 536 MtCO2eq by 2030. South Korea will use its Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS), which covers 73.5% of the national GHG emissions, to meet its target.

The US conducts first oil and gas lease in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge

The US administration has conducted the first oil and gas lease sale for the Coastal Plain of Alaska’s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR), which is estimated to contain up to 11.8 Gbl of oil. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has received bids on half of the 22 tracts offered and 50% of the acreage. The Alaska Industrial Development and Export Authority (AIDEA) secured nine tracts, while small independent companies, Knik Arm Services and Regenerate Alaska, won two. The AIDEA plans to partner with oil companies to develop the leases it won in the auction.

Petrobras’ crude oil production in Brazil increased by 5% in 2020

The Brazilian national oil and gas company Petrobras has posted records in its 2020 annual production. Petrobras’ oil and gas production rose by 2.5% in 2020 to 2.84 mboe/d. Crude oil production in Brazil increased by 5% to 2.28 mb/d, spurred by a 45% surge in pre-salt production (up to 1.6 mb/d). Pre-salt production accounted for 66% of Petrobras’ total output in 2020. The previous records occurred in 2015 and were 2.79 Mboe/d and 2.23 mb/d of oil.

Zaporozhe-5 nuclear unit secures a 10-year licence extension (Ukraine)

The State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine (SNRC) has granted Energoatom a 10-year extension to the operating licence of unit 5 at the Zaporozhe nuclear power plant (Ukraine). Zaporozhe-5, a VVER-1000/V-320 reactor rated 950 MW (1,000 MW gross), entered commercial operations in August 1989 and its original 30-year licence expired on 27 May 2020.

Tema LNG receives FRU for its 1.7 Mt/year LNG import project (Ghana)

Ghana has received a floating regasification unit (FRU), built by Jiangnan Shipbuilding, a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation, for its 1.7 Mt/year Tema LNG import terminal project.

Pakistan allows K-Electric’s gas pipeline supplying 900 MW power project

The Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) of Pakistan has authorised K-Eletric to build and operate a gas pipeline to supply regasified liquefied natural gas (RLNG) for the 900 MW Bin Qasim III RLNG-fired power project and supplementing fuel requirement of the power plants located at its Bin Qasim Power Complex.

The Japanese power utility JERA, through its subsidiary Hitachinaka Generation, has commissioned the 650 MW Hitachinaka-1 coal-fired ultra-supercritical power plant in the Ibaraki prefecture (east Japan).

Morocco completes construction of the 210 MW Midelt wind project

The National Electricity Office (ONEE) of Morocco has completed the construction of the 210 MW Midelt wind project, which is located north-east of the town of Midelt on an area of 2,300 hectares. The construction of the Midelt wind plant required MAD2.5bn (US$282m) and construction lasted 24 months.
