South Africa will tender 6.8 GW of renewable capacity in 2021-2022
27 Jan 2021South Africa intends to launch three tenders for 6.8 GW of renewable energy sources and 5 GW of new coal, gas, and storage projects in 2021-2022. The country will tender 2.6 GW of wind and solar in January or February 2021, followed by 2.6 GW in August 2021, and 1.6 GW in January or February 2022. In addition, a procurement round for 500 MW of energy storage should take place in September 2021, followed by 1.5 GW of coal-fired capacity and 3 GW of gas-fired capacity around December 2021.

27 Jan 2021The Czech government has approved the creation of a CZK150bn (€5.8bn) modernisation fund to invest in renewable energy sources, to modernize heat supply systems, to improve energy efficiency, and to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from companies subject to the EU emission trading scheme (ETS). The country plans to finance the fund by selling carbon allowances.

27 Jan 2021The UK energy regulator Ofgem has recommended the creation of an independent electricity system operator (ESO) fully separated from National Grid to avoid conflicts of interest. National Grid, which both owns and operates the electricity transmission network of England and Wales, created a legally separate function within the group to manage the electricity system (Electricity System Operator) in 2019 but Ofgem’s proposal would lead to all ties being severed.

26 Jan 2021The Ministry of Hydrocarbon and Energy of Bolivia has launched a new biodiesel production plan. The country will build a biodiesel plant with a capacity of 12,000 bbl/d to reduce petroleum products imports. The project, which is expected to cost US$279m, will enter operations in 2024.
The new biodiesel plants are expected to reduce oil products imports. In 2019, Bolivia consumed over 36,000 bbl/d of diesel, of which 20,700 bbl/d (57%) were imported.

26 Jan 2021The Polish president has signed into law the Offshore Wind Act, which sets the legal framework for offshore wind development and plans state support for developers interested in building offshore wind projects in Poland. The new regulation introduces bilateral Contracts for Difference (CfDs), which will cover the difference between the market price of energy and the price enabling producers to cover the offshore wind production cost.

Germany installed more than 1.4 GW of new onshore wind capacity in 2020
27 Jan 2021In 2020, Germany installed 1,431 MW of new onshore wind capacity (+46%), raising the total installed onshore wind capacity to 54.9 GW, according to a survey by Deutsche WindGuard on behalf of BWE and VDMA Power Systems. For the year 2021, the association is forecasting an expansion of 2,000 – 2,500 MW based on the projects awarded.

27 Jan 2021Hungary and Russia have agreed to extend a long-term gas supply agreement which was due to expire in October 2021. Hungary, which imported 8.6 bcm of Russian gas in 2020 (-18%), is expected to import 6.2 bcm in 2021. A 15 km gas pipeline between Hungary and Serbia, with a capacity of 6 bcm/year, is scheduled to be completed by October 2021 and will enable Hungary to receive Russian gas through the Turkstream gas pipeline.

27 Jan 2021Enel has received approvals to decommission units 1 and 2 of its Fusina coal-fired plant with a total capacity of 336 MW in Venice (Italy) from 17 August 2021. The units can be called into service by the Italian power transmission operator Terna exclusively to deal with emergency situations of the national electricity system until 31 December 2021.

800 MW Vineyard Wind offshore wind park’s approval process continues (US)
27 Jan 2021Vineyard Wind has completed technical review and confirmed that selecting GE as its preferred wind turbine supplier for its 800 MW Vineyard Wind 1 offshore wind project in Massachusetts (United States) would have no impact on the project’s Construction and Operations Plan (COP). The company is thus rescinding its December 2020 request to the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) to withdraw the COP and the federal permitting will continue.
