Japan identifies 10 additional offshore wind areas

The Japanese Ministries of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) have identified 10 areas as potentially suitable for offshore wind development. Four areas are more advanced: Aomori Prefecture off the Sea of Japan (north side); Aomori Prefecture off the Sea of Japan (south side); Happo Town, Akita Prefecture and Off Noshiro City; Off Eshima, Saikai City, Nagasaki Prefecture.

Poland plans to develop 3.8 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2030

The government of Poland and representatives of the offshore wind industry have signed an agreement to develop 3.8 GW of offshore wind capacity in the Baltic Sea by 2030. The first offshore wind project could be operational as early as 2025. Poland targets 10 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2040 and estimates its potential in the Baltic Sea at up to 28 GW by 2050. Moreover, the Polish government plans to pass a bill which proposes to tender 4.6 GW of offshore wind capacity over 2020-2022, and 5.5 GW between 2023 and 2028.

German TSO 50Hertz targets 100% renewables power by 2032

German transmission system operator 50Hertz has set itself the target of getting the electricity demand in its grid area covered and securely integrated with 100% renewable energies by 2032. In 2019, the annual average share of renewables attained about 60%. To achieve this, 50Hertz will employ new approaches to system operation, implement consistent digitisation of the integration of an increasingly volatile electricity supply and take part in innovative models of sector coupling to generate heat and produce hydrogen from "green" power.

Fortum sells its district heating business in Järvenpää (Finland) for €375m

Fortum has accepted an agreement to sell its district heating business in the Järvenpää-Tuusula area in Finland to a consortium consisting of Vantaa Energy, Infranode, and Keva for €375m. The transaction, which is subject to customary closing conditions, is expected to be completed in the third quarter of 2020. In 2019, Fortum produced approximately 330 GWh of heat and approximately 90 GWh of power in Järvenpää. Since 2019, Fortum has been divesting from district heating businesses in Finland, Poland and Estonia.

Hilcorp takes over BP’s upstream assets in Alaska (US)

US independent oil exploration and production company Hilcorp has taken over management of Prudhoe Bay oil field in Alaska (United States), after the state regulators authorised BP to transfer its upstream assets, which includes 176 oil and gas leases on the North Slope, and in more than 250 surface-use permits. With this acquistion, Hilcorp becomes the second largest oil producer in Alaska. The Regulatory Commission of Alaska is yet to approve Hilcorp’s acquisition of BP’s 49% stake in the Trans Alaska Pipeline System (TAPS).

Indonesian coal producers to reduce output in a bid to bolster prices

The Indonesian Coal Mining Association (APBI) has decided to cut domestic production to 480 Mt in 2020 in a bid to increase global coal prices. The organisation forecasted Indonesian coal production to reach 530 Mt in 2020.

EDF revises upwards its nuclear generation forecast for 2020 (France)

EDF has revised upward its nuclear generation forecast in France, to around 315-325 TWh (+5 to 8%) compared to its previous forecast of April 2020. In spring, EDF had cut its 2020 nuclear output estimate in France by 20% to 300 TWh, down from an initial expectation of 375-390 TWh (corresponding to a 20% to 23% decrease). The output estimate for 2021 and 2022 remains unchanged, between 330 TWh and 360 TWh in 2021 and 2022.

Petrobras starts oil & gas production at the Atapu field (Brazil)

Brazil’s national hydrocarbon company Petrobras has started the production of oil and natural gas from the shared deposit of Atapu, through platform P-70, in the eastern portion of the Santos Basin pre-salt, near the Búzios field, Brazil. The P-70 own platform has the capacity to process up to 150 kb/d of oil and treat up to 6 mcm/d of natural gas. Petrobras holds an 89.26% stake in the deposit in partnership with Shell Brasil Petróleo (4.26%), Total E&P do Brasil (3.83%), Petrogal Brasil (1.70%) and PPSA (0.95%).

Supreme Court of Canada upholds approval of Trans Mountain oil pipeline

The Supreme Court of Canada has dismissed an appeal to the Federal Court of Appeal’s decision in February 2020 to uphold approval of Trans Mountain oil pipeline expansion (TMX) project. Several indigenous groups were contesting the approval decision, considering they were insufficiently consulted by the government of Canada.

Enel Green Power will develop a 420 MW solar project in India

Enel Green Power, through its affiliate EGP India, has won the right to sign a 25-year supply contract for a 420 MW solar project located in the State of Rajasthan, India. The project was awarded under the 2 GW Ninth Tranche of the national solar tender issued by the state-owned company Solar Energy Corporation of India.
