China considers 40% of renewables (including hydro) in its 2030 power mix

The National Energy Administration (NEA), which regulates the energy sector in China, has proposed to increase the share of renewables in power generation from 28.2% (including hydropower) in 2020 to 40% in 2030. In addition, the share of renewables excluding hydro would be raised from 10.8% in 2020 to 25.9% in 2030. The country currently plans to increase its installed wind and solar capacity to 1,200 GW in 2030. Installed wind and solar capacity are expected to reach 780 GW and 840 GW, respectively, by 2030 under a deep emissions reduction scenario.

France’s GHG emissions declined by 1.7% in 2019 to 437 MtCO2eq

According to the CITEPA, France’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reached 437 MtCO2 in 2019, a decrease of 1.7% compared to 2018. This represents a 19.7% decrease compared to 1990 and a 20.7% decrease compared to 2005 levels.

Shell unveils its net-zero emissions strategy, plans to close 7 refineries

Shell has released a new set of targets to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. The group, whose total CO2 emissions peaked in 2018 at 1.7 Gt/year, intends to reduce its net carbon intensity by 6-8% by 2023, 20% by 2030, 45% by 2035 and 100% by 2050, compared to 2016 levels.

OQ (ex Oman Oil) divests from 7.8 Mt/year Bina refinery in India

Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) has finalised an agreement to acquire a 36.7% stake held by OQ (formerly Oman Oil Company) in Bharat Oman Refineries Limited (BORL), which owns and operates a 7.8 Mt/year refinery in Bina, Madhya Pradesh (central India). BPCPL offers INR27 (US$0.4) per equity share, amounting to a total consideration of INR24bn (US$330m). Upon completion, BPCL will own 100% in BORL.

Masdar buys a 50% stake in a 1.6 GW portfolio of US renewable projects

Masdar has achieved the first closing on the acquisition of a 50% stake in a 1.6 GW renewable project portfolio in the United States from EDF. As agreed in August 2020, Masdar has acquired an interest in five solar PV projects in California totalling 689 MW, two of which include BESS totalling 75 MW, and three utility-scale wind power plants in Nebraska and Texas totalling 815 MW.

The Netherlands caps Groningen gas production at 3.9 bcm in 2021-2022

The Dutch government has decided to reduce gas extraction from the Groningen gas field from 8.1 bcm in 2020-2021 to 3.9 bcm in the next gas year (October 2021-September 2022). From the spring of 2022, gas will no longer be needed from the Groningen field (in a year with average weather conditions). A previous estimate that forecast an output of 3.1 bcm in 2021-2022 has been revised upward due to higher market demand in the Netherlandse. After 2022, the field will be used as a reserve during an extremely cold situation and it should close in 2025-2026.

EWC aims to revive its 2 Mt/year Sengkang LNG export project in Indonesia

Energy World Corporation (EWC) plans to restart development of its 0.5 Mt/year Sengkang LNG liquefaction project in South Sulawesi (Indonesia) after the company resolved a four-year land matter. The project, which is almost complete, could be expanded to 2 Mt/year using funds generated from LNG sales. Commissioning is scheduled within 18-24 months after the first LNG sales.

Northland plans to bid in Taiwan’s next offshore wind auction

Northland Power intends to participate into Taiwan’s upcoming third-round offshore wind auction, which is expected in 2022, with two offshore wind projects. The two projects, NorthWind and CanWind, would have combined capacity of 1.8 GW, and would be located off the coasts of Taichung county and Chunghwa. The company is currently developing the 1,044 MW Hai Long offshore wind project in Taiwan in partnership with Yushan Energy (40%).

Siemens wins order for Eneco-Shell offshore wind project in the Netherlands

CrossWind, a joint venture between Shell (79.9%) and Eneco (20.1%), and Siemens Gamesa has executed the contract to supply 69 SG 11.0-200 DD offshore wind turbines and a 15-year service and a maintenance agreement for the 759 MW Hollandse Kust Noord offshore wind project in the Netherlands. In July 2020, CrossWind won the tender for the project, located off Egmond aan Zee. The subsidy-free project is expected to be operational in 2023. The wind project would generate 3.3 TWh/year of renewable electricity.

Gazprom still expects to commission NordStream 2 gas pipeline in 2021

Gazprom has reaffirmed its plan to commission the 55 bcm/year Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline in 2021. The €9.5bn (US$11bn) Nord Stream 2 project is aimed at doubling the throughput of the current Nord Stream gas pipeline between Vyborg (Russia) and Greifswald (Germany), from 55 bcm/year to 110 bcm/year. It is developed by Gazprom (50%), Uniper, Shell, OMV, Wintershall and Engie (10% each). In January 2020, Russia had postponed its commissioning from mid-2020 to the end of 2020 or early 2021.
