France awards 452 MW of solar PV capacity
24 Feb 2021The French Energy Regulatory Commission has selected 69 PV projects representing a total capacity of 452 MW. In the first category, which comprises ground-mounted PV projects exceeding 5 MW in size, the CRE allocated 216 MW (less than the proposed quota of 400 MW), at an average final price of €5.33c/kWh. In the second category, including ground-mounted PV projects with a capacity between 500 kW and 5 MW, the allocated capacity was 120 MW (for a quota of 170 MW) and the final average price stood at €6.22c/kWh.

23 Feb 2021The United States has officially re-entered the Paris agreement on climate change, after having officially withdrawn in November 2020. The Paris agreement was signed by nearly 200 countries in December 2015, in an attempt to cut global GHG emissions and to keep global temperature increases "well below" 2°C. The United States, which committed in November 2014 to reduce net greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 26%-28% below 2005 levels by 2025, formally ratified the agreement in September 2016.

23 Feb 2021The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has awarded a JPY25bn (US$240m) Official Development Assistance (ODA) loan to Egypt to reform its power sector. The project, which is also supported by the AfDB (US$270m) and the AFD (US$90m), aims to enhance sustainability and stability in the power sector through supporting policy reforms such as promoting energy efficiency and renewable energy for green growth.

China’s CTG will acquire a 330 MW wind power portfolio in Spain
24 Feb 2021The Chinese state-owned power group China Three Gorges (CTG) has signed an agreement with a consortium led by Corporacion Masaveu to acquire a 330 MW portfolio of wind power plants in Spain for €500m. The portfolio includes eight wind parks owned by Borawind in the Burgos region, north of Madrid.

The Damietta LNG plant restarts production in Egypt
24 Feb 2021The 6.75 bcm/year (5 Mt/year) Damietta gas liquefaction plant in northern Egypt has restarted operations, producing and lifting its first LNG cargo since late 2012. The LNG plant was commissioned in 2005 but had been idle since November 2012 due to a lack of gas.

A Total affiliate plans a 300 MW floating offshore wind project in the UK
24 Feb 2021Blue Gem Wind, a joint venture between Total and Simply Blue Energy, has submitted an environmental scoping report for the proposed 300 MW Valorous floating offshore wind project, which would be located 50 km south-west of the Pembrokeshire coastline in the Celtic Sea waters of the United Kingdom. The joint venture is already developing the 96 MW Erebus demonstration floating offshore wind project, which has already secured a lease; Total targets a final investment decision for the Erebus project by 2024. Blue Gem Wind is 80% owned by Total and by 20% by Simply Blue Energy.

24 Feb 2021Petronas Gas (PetGas), an affiliate of the Malaysian oil and gas company Petronas, will invest MYR541m (US$134m) to build a 42-km long gas pipeline between its existing Peninsular Gas Utilisation (PGU) II and a prospective 1,200 MW gas-fired CCGT power plant in Pulau Indah (Selangor), and the related industrial areas along its route.

24 Feb 2021Iraq plans build seven solar power plants totalling 750 MW with the help of international investors. The projects should be located in the south of the country, including a 300 MW solar plant in Kerbala.
Solar accounts for less than 1% of Iraq’s installed capacity, with only 40 MW. More than 1.3 GW of solar projects are currently under development.

24 Feb 2021The US Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) has awarded a preliminary permit to Daybreak Power for the construction of the 2,200 MW Navajo Energy Storage Station (NESS) pumped storage hydropower plant near Page, Arizona (United States). The US$3.6bn project would utilise the existing transmission infrastructure of the retired 2,250 MW (3×750 MW) Navajo coal-fired power plant that was shut down in November 2019.

24 Feb 2021The Greek Inter-ministerial Committee for Strategic Investments has approved the 470 MW Evia wind power project, which is developed by Ellaktor and EDP Renewables at an estimated cost of €489m. The project, which comprises eight wind plants, four in north central Evia and four in South Evia (Central Greece), is expected to produce 1,591 GWh/year. The project will contribute to boost renewable power generation and support Greece’s plans to phase out coal by 2028.
