Canada unveils a new federal greenhouse gas offset system

The federal government of Canada has released draft regulations on a new federal greenhouse gas (GHG) offset system, which would allow municipalities, farmers, indigenous communities, businesses, and others to earn offset credits for projects that reduce GHG emissions or take them out of the atmosphere. Initiatives may include advanced refrigeration systems, landfill methane management, forest management and sustainable agricultural land management.

South Korea plans to add another 2.1 GW of floating PV capacity by 2030

South Korea intends to deploy another 2.1 GW of floating solar PV capacity by 2030. To do so, the Ministry of Environment has already selected five dams – Hapcheon, Gunwi, Chungju, Soyang River, and Imha – as potential sites for the implementation of the first solar floating projects, which would have a total capacity of 147 MW. This 2.1 GW programme is part of South Korea’s strategy to become carbon neutral by 2050.

China plans to increase its nuclear capacity by 40% over 2021-2025

China has released its 14th Five-Year Plan covering the 2021-2025 period and announced its aim to increase its nuclear power capacity by 40% from 50 GW in 2020 to 70 GW in 2025. In addition, the country intends to get 20% of its total energy consumption from non-fossil fuels by 2025 (15.9% in 2020). China also intends to reduce its energy intensity (i.e. energy use per unit of GDP) by 13.5% and its carbon intensity (i.e. CO2 emissions per unit of GDP) by 18% over the 2021-2025 period.

India’s SECI initiates tender for 1,785 MW of solar capacity in Rajasthan

The Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) has launched a Request for Selection (RfS) to develop an aggregate 1,785 MW of grid-connected solar PV capacity in Rajasthan (northern India). Bidding for the Tranche-IV tender closes on 19 Avril 2021. The successful projects, which are to be developed on a build-own-operate (BOO) basis in minimum sizes of 10 MW, will have to be completed within 18 months and will sign 25-year power purchase agreements (PPAs) with SECI.

Statkraft sells its stake in a 256 MW wind power plant in Norway

Statkraft has sold its 52.1% stake in the 256 MW Roan wind power plant in Central Norway to TronderEnergi and the German municipal utility Stadtwerke München. The project, which comprises 71 wind turbines, was commissioned in 2018 and produces around 884 GWh/year. The transaction is expected to close by the end of April 2020.

First turbines installed at the 383 MW Fryslân wind project (Netherlands)

The installation of wind turbines has started at the 383 MW Fryslân near-shore wind project, located off the Frisian coast near the Afsluitdijk dike in the Netherlands. The project, developed by Eneco, consists of 89 wind turbines rated 4.3 MW each with a total capacity of 383 MW and will start to produce power by mid-2021. Once fully commissioned, it should generate around 1.5 TWh/year of renewable electricity.

Equinor and Polenergia submit 1.4 GW bid in Polish offshore wind auction

Equinor and Polenergia through their joint venture MFW Bałtyk have submitted applications for contracts for difference (CfD) for the Bałtyk II and Bałtyk III offshore wind projects located in the Polish Baltic Sea. The two offshore wind projects are rated 720 MW each.

JERA seeks approval to develop a 600 MW offshore wind project in Japan

JERA, the joint venture between Japanese power utilities TEPCO and Chubu Electric, has submitted a primary environmental impact consideration document to build a 600 MW offshore wind project off the towns of Tsugaru and Ajigasawa in Aomori Prefecture, Japan. The project will include up to 63 wind turbines rated 9.5 MW each. Construction should take 3 years.

The Philippines approves AG&P’s 3 Mt/year LNG import terminal project

The Philippines LNG and gas logistics group Atlantic Gulf & Pacific Company of Manila (AG&P, part-owned by Osaka Gas and JBIC of Japan) has received approval from the Philippines’ Department of Energy (DOE) to develop its 3 Mt/year Philippines LNG (PLNG) LNG import and regasification terminal in Batangas Bay on the main island of Luzon.

Greece, Cyprus and Israel sign an MoU on the Euro-Asia Interconnector

Greece, Cyprus and Israel have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to build the Euro-Asia Interconnector, a 1,000-2,000 MW subsea HVDC line between the three countries. The US$900m (€760m) project, with a length of about 1,500 km and a maximum depth of 2,700 metres, should be completed by 2024.
