Italy aims at cutting its GHG emissions by 60% in 2030 compared to 1990
12 Mar 2021Italy intends to reduce its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by around 60% by 2030 compared to 1990 levels after using €80bn of EU funds for energy transition in the next five years. The country plans to add 40 GW of renewable capacity to accelerate decarbonisation by 2050.

12 Mar 2021According to a draft electricity plan released by the Vietnamese Ministry of Industry and Trade, Vietnam will need about US$320bn to develop its power sector in 2021-2045, including US$235bn for electricity and US$85bn for the grid. The supply of commercial electricity is forecast to reach 491 TWh in 2030 (+87% compared to 2019) and 877 TWh by 2045 (+265%).

France’s Neoen targets 10 GW of renewable capacity by 2025
12 Mar 2021The French independent power producer Neoen plans to have 10 GW of clean power capacity in operation or under construction by 2025, i.e. more than twice its current capacity (4.1 GW, including 2.6 GW in operation and 1.4 GW under construction at the end of 2020). The company plans to double the pace at which it wins new projects, from 1 GW in 2019-2020, to 2 GW per year as of 2025. Consequently, Neoen intends to invest €5.3bn over the 2021-2025 period.

12 Mar 2021Eni and CDP Equity have set up a new joint venture, GreenIT, which will produce mainly from solar photovoltaic (PV) and wind power plants in Italy, with the aim of reaching an installed capacity of approximately 1,000 MW by 2025. Green IT, which is 51% owned by Eni and 49% by CDP Equity, is expected to invest over €800m in the five-year period.

Wind capacity additions in America rose by 62% in 2020 to 22 GW
12 Mar 2021According to the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC), 22 GW of new wind capacity was installed in both North and Latin America in 2020, which is 62% more than in 2019. Most of the new wind capacity – 16.9 GW – was installed in the United States. In addition, nearly 4.7 GW were installed in Latin America: 2.3 GW were installed in Brazil, 1 GW in Argentina, 684 MW in Chile and 574 MW in Mexico.

11 Mar 2021The Australian energy group EnergyAustralia plans to shut down the 1,480 MW Yallourn coal-fired power plant in Victoria (Australia) by mid-2028, i.e. 4 years than previously planned. The company also intends to build a 350 MW battery with four hours of capacity at its Jeeralang site in Victoria by 2026. The closure of Yallourn is expected to cut EnergyAustralia’s CO2 emission by 60%, helping the group meet its carbon-neutrality goal by 2050.

Romania will ratify deal with the US for Cernavoda nuclear project
12 Mar 2021The Romanian government has approved the draft law on the ratification of the agreement between Romania and the United stated on cooperation in relation with the Cernavoda nuclear power project. In October 2020, Romania and the United States agreed to cooperate for the construction of Units 3 and 4 and the refurbishment of Unit 1 at the Cernavoda nuclear power plant. Romania will use US technology and expertise for the modernisation and new build project.

12 Mar 2021A US company, Sun Africa, will build 7 solar-plus-storage plants with a total capacity of 370 MW in Angola, including 189 MW Central do Biópio in Lobito, 97 MW in Benguela, 27 MW in Saurimo (Lunda Sul), 27 MW in Luena (Moxico), 15 MW in Cuito (Bie), 8 MW in Bailundo (Huambo) and 7 MW in Lucapa (Lunda Norte). The projects, which are expected to cost €524m and will be funded by SEK (Swedish export promotion agency), with guarantees from the Swedish Export Credit Agency (EKN), should be commissioned in 2022.
