Taiwan will tender 15 GW of offshore wind capacity until 2035

Taiwan intends to increase the volume tendered in its upcoming offshore wind Round 3 from 10 GW to 15 GW. The authorities plan to add 1.5 GW/year of offshore wind capacity from 2026 until 2035, instead of previously planned 1 GW/year. Taiwan is expected to develop a total of 9 GW of offshore wind between 2026 and 2031 and 6 GW between 2032 and 2035.

Kenya plans to create an emission trading scheme

Kenya, which aims to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, plans to establish an emission trading scheme (ETS) that would allow companies sell and buy allowances. To do so, the country will soon create a national carbon credits and green assets registry.

EU parliament committee approves climate change law

The environment committee of the European Parliament has approved the EU climate change law, which enshrines the EU’s commitment to reaching climate neutrality by 2050 and the intermediate target of reducing net greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by at least 55% by 2030, compared to 1990 levels. Before it enters into force, the text must now be voted by the full European Parliament and approved by the EU member states.

The UK will launch the 4th CfD round for renewables projects by end-2021

The UK authorities intend to launch the fourth round for Contracts for Difference (CfD) scheme for renewables projects in December 2021. The new round is expected to increase the renewable capacity from 5.8 GW achieved in the last round to 12 GW, with three technology-specific tenders: one for established technologies such as onshore wind and solar PV, another one for less-established technologies including tidal steam, floating offshore wind, and advanced conversion technologies and a third one for offshore wind projects only.

Indonesia plans to convert 5.2 GW of diesel-fired capacity to renewables

The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) of Indonesia will issue a decree to convert diesel-fired power plants that are still operating in the country into renewables projects. The conversion projects will be led in stages, ending in 2025-2026. The authorities plan to start with 358 diesel-fired power plants totalling 307 MW that would be replaced with solar power plants. The first phase is expected to be completed in 2023-2024. At a later stage, solar power plants with storage could be used, or solar power plants hybridised with diesel.

Massachusetts (US) launches third offshore wind round for 1.6 GW

Massachusetts (United States) has launched a third offshore wind solicitation round, seeking 1.6 GW of offshore wind capacity. The price cap is set at US$77.76/MWh. Bidders can submit projects until 23 September 2021 and winners will be selected by 17 December 2021.

Everfuel plans a 300 MW electrolyser in Denmark

12 May 2021

Everfuel plans to develop a 300 MW electrolyser and Power-to-X plant adjacent to the Fredericia refinery in Denmark. Around 20% of the so-called “green” hydrogen produced at the plant from wind and solar power generation will be dedicated to direct usage as pure hydrogen for transport, while 80% will be used as a feedstock for the fuel refining processes.

Pakistan selects China’s PCCL to build a 1.5 GW hydropower project

The Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) of Pakistan has selected Power Construction Corporation of China Ltd. (PCCCL) to build the 1,530 MW (3×510 MW) Tarbela 5th extension hydropower project. The civil works contract is worth US$355m and full commissioning is scheduled in mid-2024.

SSE and Equinor plan a 900 MW gas-fired power plant with CCS in the UK

SSE Thermal and Equinor have unveiled plans to develop a 900 MW gas-fired power plant fitted with carbon capture technology to remove CO2 from its emissions at Peterhead site in Aberdeenshire in Scotland (United Kingdom).

EDF’s 600 MW Dunkirk offshore wind project moves ahead (France)

Eoliennes en Mer de Dunkerque (EMD), a consortium of EDF Renouvelables, Enbridge and RWE (previously innogy), and the French power transmission system operator (TSO) RTE have decided to go ahead with the 600 MW Dunkirk offshore wind project, after completing the public consultation phase. The consortium, which offered a price below €50/MWh (€44/MWh), was selected by the French authorities to develop the project in June 2019. The project will consist of up to 46 wind turbines and is expected to be commissioned in 2027. It should generate 2.3 TWh/year, enough to supply 500,000 households.
