India aims to raise its refining capacity by 20% by 2025

Indian state-owned oil and gas groups, which include Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), Bharat Petroleum and their affiliates, plan to invest INR2,000bn (US$27bn) to increase the country’s refining capacity by 20% to 298 Mt/year in 2025. In addition, India’s refining industry is expected to be modernised and upgraded to reduce costs. IOC aims to ramp up its refining capacity by 25% to 88 Mt/year by 2024-2025.
Uniper will stop a 500 MW coal-fired unit at Ratcliffe (UK) in 2022

Uniper plans to close one the four 500 MW units of Ratcliffe hard coal-fired power plant in the Midlands (United Kingdom) by the end of September 2022. The 2 GW power plant is scheduled to be fully decommissioned by the end of September 2024.

Spain’s nuclear regulator recommends lifetime extension for Asco nuclear plant

The Spanish Nuclear Safety Council (CSN) has recommended to the government to extend the operating licence for the Asco 1 nuclear unit by 9 years until 2030 and for Asco 2 by 10 years until 2031. The Asco nuclear power plant is located in Asco, Catalonia, in Spain, and comprises two 2 PWR reactors of 995 MW each, which entered commercial operations in 1984 and 1986. Both units are licensed until 2021.

Siemens Gamesa will supply turbines for a 242 MW wind project in Sweden

Arise has selected Siemens Gamesa to supply turbines for its 242 MW Twin Peaks wind project in central Sweden. The project, which is expected to enter commercial operations in the first quarter of 2024, includes two wind plants around 15 km apart: Ranasjö (155 MW) and Salsjö (87 MW). The turbines will be covered by a service agreement of 30 years.
China’s Trina Solar wins order for an 850 MW solar project in Brazil

Focus Energia has selected the Chinese company Trina Solar to supply photovoltaic modules for its 850 MW Futura 1 solar project located in Juazeiro, Bahia, Brazil. The solar PV project should be commissioned in April 2022 and two other phases are planned.
Brazil’s solar capacity almost doubled in 2019 and increased by more than 70% in 2020 reaching 7.7 GW.

US Wind unveils a 1.2 GW offshore wind project in Maryland (US)

US Wind plans to develop a new offshore wind project located in federal waters far off the coast of Maryland (United States). The 1.2 GW Momentum offshore wind project would include up to 82 turbines. The company is also developing the 270 MW Marwin offshore wind project, which would comprise 22 turbines, in Maryland.
The United States plans to deploy 30 GW of offshore wind in the country by 2030.
The Matiari-Lahore transmission project completes tests (Pakistan)

The National Transmission and Despatch Company (NTDC) has successfully tested the Matiari-Lahore high voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission line in Pakistan. The 660 kV transmission line is spread over a span of 890 km and capable of transmitting 4,000 MW from the power plants in the south of Pakistan to the northern part of the country.

Israel will launch a carbon tax in 2023, starting with fossil fuels

The Israeli government has approved the creation of a tax on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The taxation will start in 2023 and will progressively increase until 2028. In the first stage, the tax will be levied on fossil fuels (coal, gas, fuel oil, liquified petroleum gas, and petcoke), covering around 80% of Israel’s GHG emissions.
Ukraine commits to cut its GHG emissions by 40% between 1990 and 2030

Ukraine has updated its First Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC). The country has committed to reduce its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions (including LULUCF) in 2030 by 65% compared to the level of 1990 and to reach carbon neutrality by 2060.
