China has pledged to stop building new coal-fired power projects abroad, ahead of the COP26. The country will instead step-up support for renewables and low-carbon energy projects. South Korea and Japan made similar moves earlier in 2021.

Turkey plans to ratify the Paris Agreement on climate change in October 2021

Turkey has pledged to ratify the Paris Agreement on climate change in October 2021. The country signed the agreement in 2016 but it has yet to formally ratify the accord by a vote in parliament. Its INDC (2015) set the objective of reducing GHG emissions by 21% in 2030 compared with a BAU scenario, which corresponds to a 116% increase from 2012 levels, and Turkey has not submitted any NDC.

Malaysia plans to develop an emissions trading scheme (ETS)

The Malaysian government has endorsed a proposal by the Ministry of Environment and Water (KASA) to develop a voluntary emissions trading scheme (ETS). The country aims to prepare actors in the economy for the implementation of carbon control mechanisms through international trade such as the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism by the European Union in 2023. The Ministry of Finance, Bursa Malaysia and other interested parties will develop a Domestic Emissions Trading Scheme (DETS) in phases, including a single transaction platform.

Poland refuses to shut down PGE’s Turów lignite mine and to pay EU fine

The Court of Justice of the European Union has ordered Poland to pay the EU budget a daily penalty of €500,000 because it has not ceased lignite extraction activities at Turów, in violation of an earlier ruling; Poland has refused to comply with the order, citing energy security concerns.

EDPR signs PPA with TC Energy for a 297 MW wind project in Canada

EDP Renewables (EDPR) has secured a 15-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with TC Energy for 100% of the output of its 297 MW Sharp Hills wind power plant, located in the Special Areas municipality near the hamlets of Sedalia and New Bridgen, in the province of Alberta (Canada).

Colbún starts building the 778 MW Horizonte wind project in Chile

Colbún, the second largest power generation company in Chile, has started building the 778 MW Horizonte wind project in the municipality of Taltal, in the Antofagasta Region, which had just secured environmental approval for up to 980 MW. The company has reduced the size of the project from 980 MW to 778 MW; the initial plan was to erect a 607 MW wind project.

Poland and Denmark agree to cooperate on the Baltic Pipe gas pipeline

The energy regulators of Poland (Energy Regulatory Office, ERO) and Denmark (Danish Utility Regulator, DUR) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on joint activities for the 10 bcm/year gas pipeline Baltic Pipe project. The two regulators have agreed to exchange information on any circumstances and actions that may affect the proper enforcement of the European Union law in relation to the infrastructure of the Baltic Pipe project.

The second phase of the 1 GW Karapinar solar project moves forward (Turkey)

The Turkish conglomerate Kalyon Group has selected GE Renewable Energy to supply an inverter to the 270 MW Karapinar phase II-A and 810 MW Karapinar phase II-B solar plant located in Turkey’s central Anatolian province of Konya. The scope of work includes design, engineering, project management, site management and commissioning. The solar projects should enter commercial operations by December 2022.
