Israel selects 11 projects (168 MW) in solar-plus-storage tender
17 Jul 2020The Electricity Market Regulatory Authority of Israel, which had pre-qualified 15 bidders proposing 45 projects (465 MW) for its solar-plus-storage tender, has selected 11 projects proposed by three developers and totalling 168 MW. Israeli project developers Doral Energy and Enlight Renewable Energy were awarded 100 MW and 48 MW, respectively, while Alumni Capital (United States) won 20 MW. The projects will have to be connected to the national grid in 2022 and will sell their power generation at a final price of ILS19.90/kWh (US$5.78c/kWh).

17 Jul 2020The Government of Panama is considering launching an auction for 200 MW of renewable power capacity to supply state entities. A first pilot auction could be opened before the end of 2020 for 30 MW to 40 MW (it could be later expanded to 200 MW) and it would be opened to all technologies. Panama is also working on a new law (Law of Fiscal and Non-Fiscal Incentives for the Development of Electric Mobility) to support electric mobility, to open the sale of electricity for electric vehicles; since 1997, only power distribution companies can sell electricity.

16 Jul 2020The German energy regulator (Bundesnetzagentur, federal network agency) has launched a tender for 650 MW of renewable power projects with innovative technologies (400 MW for 2020 plus 250 MW for projects non awarded in 2019), focusing on bids on arable and grassland areas in disadvantaged areas. The upper limit in the network expansion area for this tender round is 141 MW. Projects developers will have to submit their bids by 1 September 2020 and the bids will be capped at €3c/kWh for individual systems and at €7.5c/kWh for system combinations.

16 Jul 2020South Korea has presented its KRW 73tn (US$61bn) Green New Deal, aimed at developing a low-carbon economy and which would focus on developing electric and hydrogen cars. The country aims to raise the number of electric vehicles on the roads from 91,000 in late 2019 to 1.13 million by 2025 and that of hydrogen cars from 5,000 to 200,000. Earlier in July 2020, the city of Seoul announced that it would stop registration of vehicles with internal combustion engines in 2035 and that it would convert public buses to hydrogen or electricity by 2025.

CFE suspends 4 power projects (1.7 GW) over economic conditions (Mexico)
17 Jul 2020Mexico’s state-owned power company Comision Federal de Electricidad (CFE) has decided to suspend three CCGT power projects, namely the 837 MW Salamanca, 42 MW Baja California Sur VI, 790 MW San Luis Potosi, and the 25 MW Los Humeros III Fase B geothermal power plant, due to the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. 17 Jul 2020The Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) has completed the construction of the second unit of the Barakah nuclear power plant, in the Al Dhafra region of Abu Dhabi (United Arab Emirates) and will now seek to secure an operating licence from the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR). The Barakah project is developed by Nawah Energy, a joint venture of ENEC Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation and Korea Electric Power Corporation (Kepco).

17 Jul 2020The Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority (United Kingdom) has granted planning consent for a portion of the proposed 500 MW Greenlink Interconnector project between Pembroke in Wales (UK) and the County Wexford in Ireland, allowing onshore works in Wales. The privately-financed project submitted marine planning applications in both Wales and Ireland in late 2019 and the application for onshore works in Ireland is under preparation. The construction is expected to last 3 years and the project could be operational in 2023.
