European Commission clears Ireland’s renewable support scheme

The European Commission has approved Ireland’s Renewable Electricity Support Scheme (RESS), considering that it complied with EU State aid rules without unduly distorting competition. Moreover, the scheme is expected to help Ireland meet its national target to reach a share of 70% of renewables in its power mix by 2030.

US court clears linking carbon markets in California and Quebec (Canada)

The District Court for the Eastern District of California (United States) has ruled that linking the carbon markets of California (US) and Quebec (Canada) is constitutional and doesn’t conflict with the federal governments foreign policy. This decision could encourage new linkages between US states and Canadian provincial markets.

New Jersey (US) confirms plans to develop 7.5 GW of offshore wind by 2035

The state of New Jersey (United States) has released its draft Offshore Wind Strategic Plan, confirming its plans to develop 7.5 GW of offshore wind power by 2035. The plan determines infrastructure projects (including transmission networks), and protection measures for the fishing industry among other things.

Petrobras completes sale of TAG gas pipeline (Brazil) to Engie and CDPQ

The Brazilian oil and gas company Petrobras has concluded the sale of its remaining 10% stake in Transportadora Associada de Gás (TAG) to Engie and Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec (CDPQ) for BRL 1.1bn (US$206m). TAG is active in gas transportation, operating a 4,500 km gas pipeline system in the North and Northeast regions of Brazil, which can deliver up to 75 mcm/d (over 27 bcm/year). Petrobras, which used to be the sole owner in TAG, sold a 90% stake in the company to Engie and CDPQ in June 2019. The two companies will now jointly own 100% of TAG.

Mexico extends operating license for Laguna Verde nuclear reactor

The Ministry of Energy of Mexico (Sener) has renewed the operating license for the first unit of the Laguna Verde nuclear power plant in Alto Lucero (Mexico). The 777 MW reactor, which was commissioned in July 1990, will be allowed to operate for another 30 years, until July 2050. The second unit, rated 775 MW, was commissioned in April 1995 and is currently licensed to operate until April 2025.

State Grid commissions new 800 kV UHVDC power line in China

State Grid Corporation of China has commissioned the 800 kV Qinghai-Henan ultra-high voltage direct current (UHVDC) power transmission line, which will deliver up to 40 TWh/year of electricity from the Hainan Tibetan autonomous prefecture of Qinghai (northwest China) to the central China province of Henan through the Gansu and Shaanxi provinces. The power line stretches over 1,587 km and required a total investment of CNY 22.3bn (US$3.2bn). Construction had started in November 2018.

Petropars signs US$1.3bn contract to double Iranian oil field production

The National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC) and the domestic oil company Petropars have signed a US$1.3bn agreement to develop the South Azadegan oil field in the Khuzestan Province, in southwestern Iran. The South Azadegan oil field is part of the West Karoun oil block in Khuzestan, which would hold 67 Gbl of oil in place. South Azadegan is estimated to hold 27 Gbl of oil in place, of which 1.7 Gbl would be extractable.

Brookfield Renewable acquires a 1,200 MW solar project in Brazil

Brookfield Renewable Partners has signed a binding agreement to acquire a 1,200 MW solar project in Brazil and will invest around US$200m to complete the project. The transaction is subject to conditions and is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2020. The project should be commissioned in early 2023 and around 75% of its capacity is already contracted under long-term power purchase agreements (PPAs).

NTPC starts second unit of 1.6 GW Lara coal-fired power plant in India

Indian state-owned thermal power generation company NTPC has commissioned the second 800 MW unit of its 1,600 MW Lara supercritical coal-fired power plant in Chhattisgarh (India), whose first 800 MW unit was commissioned in September 2019.
