UK’s NIC recommends 65% of renewables in power generation by 2030

The UK’s National Infrastructure Commission (NIC) has updated its target for deployment of renewables as part of a low-cost low carbon electricity system, from 50% to 65% by 2030. According to the NIC, accelerating the deployment of renewable power generation will better position the UK to reach net-zero emissions, help provide long-term confidence in the economy at a crucial time, and won’t cost consumers more.

Nigeria opens its oil transport network to private investors

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has launched a tender for the rehabilitation of its oil pipelines and associated depots and terminal infrastructure under a finance, build, operate and transfer (BOT) model. Bidders for the projects will operate the revamped facilities over a defined period to allow for full recovery of cost and agreed compensation.

Nigeria details plans to upgrade its transmission capacity by 2025

As part of its electricity deal with the government, Siemens will upgrade 105 power substations and build 70 new ones along with 35 power transformers. In addition, 3,765 distribution transformers will be installed, and 5,109 km distribution lines be built with a potential capacity of over 13,000 MW.

Pakistan targets a 30% share of renewables in power mix by 2030

The government of Pakistan plans to increase the share of its power generation from renewables (excluding hydropower) from less than 4% in 2018 to 20% by 2025 and 30% by 2030. The target will include mainly wind and solar power, but also geothermal, tidal and biomass energy. The share of renewables (including hydropower) in Pakistan’s power mix could increase from around 26% in 2018 to reach 65% by 2030, thanks to a boost in hydropower capacity. Pakistan intends to add between 7 to 8 GW of renewable power capacity by 2025.

Occidental Petroleum suspends the sale of its Algerian oil assets

Occidental Petroleum has suspended the sale process of its oil assets in Algeria, which account for nearly 1/4 of the total crude oil production in the country with around 260,000 bbl/d, and the group will seek to divest other assets to reduce its massive debt.

ENN connects its Zhoushan LNG terminal to the Chinese gas grid

The Chinese private gas distribution company ENN Group has commissioned an 81-km subsea natural gas pipeline connecting its 3 Mt/year (4.1 bcm/year) LNG import terminal on Zhoushan Island in Zhejiang province (China) to Zhenhai in Ningbo. The 8 bcm/year gas pipeline is connected to Hang Yong Line’s provincial grid.

Azerbaijan expects Karabakh oil field to enter production in 2022

Azerbaijan expects oil and gas production to start at the Karabakh offshore field in the Caspian Sea at the end of 2022. The field has estimated oil reserves of 40 Mt, and recoverable reserves of 21 Mt. Oil production will reach 1.5 Mt/year, while gas production should reach 4.5 mcm/d. The field is developed by a joint venture between Azerbaijan’s national oil and gas company SOCAR and Norway’s Equinor. In 2019, Azerbaijan produced around 38 Mt of oil.

North Carolina (United States) has denied water quality certification for Mountain Valley Pipeline (MVP) for its MVP Southgate gas pipeline project that would extend the route of the Mountain Valley Pipeline from southern Virginia to central North Carolina.

Brazil plans a new 1.2 GW offshore wind plant in Ceará

BI Energia plans to develop a 1.2 GW offshore wind project in Camocim (Ceará, northeast Brazil) for a total investment of BRL14bn (US$2.6bn). The project was authorised by the Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (IBAMA) to prepare an environmental impact study. The offshore wind power plant is due to enter operation in 2022.

Elba Island LNG export project should be operational in September 2020

The US Federal Energy Regulation Commission (FERC) has authorised Kinder Morgan to commission the ninth 0.25 Mt/year liquefaction train (Train 10) of its 2.5 Mt/year Elba Island LNG project in Savannah, Georgia (United States).
