A single consortium is formed to develop the Inga III hydro project (Congo DR)

Six Chinese companies led by China Three Gorges Corporation and Spain-based AEE Power have agreed to form a single consortium to develop the Inga III hydro project in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (Congo DR). The six Chinese companies have a 75% stake in the new consortium, while AEE Power retains a 25% share. The formation of a single entity between the Spanish consortium, which includes AEE Power and ACS, and the China Three Gorges Corporation-led consortium, was requested by the Congolese government.

Woodside blocks Lukoil’s 40% stake acquisition in RSSD oil project (Senegal)

Woodside Petroleum has pre-empted the sale by Cairn Energy to Lukoil of its 40% stake in the Rufisque Offshore, Sangomar Offshore and Sangomar Deep Offshore (RSSD) project in Senegal. Woodside will make an upfront payment of US$300m, along with contingent payments of up to US$100m. The transaction remains subject to approval by the Government of Senegal, as well as approval by Cairn Energy’s shareholders and other customary conditions. Woodside Petroleum’s stake in the RSSD joint venture after completion of the acquisition will increase to 68% and the company will remain the operator.

Slovakia launches modernisation project at Mochovce 1&2 nuclear reactors

Slovakia’s Slovenské elektrárne has started to upgrade its Mochovce 1&2 nuclear power units. The modernisation project, which has been awarded to Doosan Škoda Power in March 2020, will increase by 7% the capacity of the Mochovce nuclear power plant (from 942 MW to 1000 MW). The project is expected to be fully completed by early 2021.

SGRE gets order for Adani’s 473 MW wind project in Fatehgardh (India)

Siemens Gamesa (SGRE) has received a firm order of 215 units of its SG 2.2-122 wind turbines from Adani (India). The order totals 473 MW which will be installed at Adani’s wind power plant project in Fatehgarh, Rajasthan, India. The project is expected to be commissioned in September 2021.

Statkraft plans to expand its Berry Burn wind plant to 104.5 MW (UK)

Norwegian state-owned electric utility Statkraft has filed a request with the Scotish authorities to expand its 66.7 MW Berry Burn wind plant by 37.8 MW (UK). The plant was commissioned in 2014 and is owned by Stakraft (51%) and Gingko Tree Investment (49%).

The 1.2 GW Forest Wind project (Australia) passed a new milestone

The parliament of Queensland (Australia) has adopted the Forest Wind Farm Development Bill 2020, which aims at facilitating the development of the 1.2 GW Forest Wind project. The text authorises tenure for the project to occur on actively managed exotic pine plantation licence areas in the Toolara, Tuan and Neerdie State forests between Gympie and Maryborough.

Iran seeks to boost its crude oil production by 180 kb/d within 3 years

Two affiliates of the National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC), namely the National Iranian South Oil Company and Iran Central Oil Fields Company, have signed contracts with 14 domestic hydrocarbon companies, to raise Iran’s crude oil output by 185,000 bbl/d within three years. The 14 production, maintenance, and enhancement agreements are worth US$14bn, and include 29 onshore projects and 4 offshore projects. The NIOC will fund projects to the tune of 80%, while contractors will provide the remaining 20%.

In 2019, Iran’s crude oil production averaged 2.4 mb/d.

Brazil’s Copel auctions 595 MW of renewable projects

Copel Mercado Livre (Brazil), a subsidiary of regional electric utility Companhia Paranaense de Energia (Copel), has contracted 595 MW of renewable capacity, including 411 MW of solar and 184 MW of wind, through an auction held on 14 August 2020. The new plants will deliver electricity to Copel for a period of 13 years, starting in 2023. The auction had 1,970 MW of wind and solar power registered.

As of August 2020, wind and solar accounted for 9% and 3% of Brazil’s installed capacity, with 15 GW and 4 GW, respectively.

India’s NTPC starts tender to develop 1,070 MW of solar capacity in Rajasthan

The state-owned NTPC has launched a tender for the development of 1,070 MW of solar capacity in Rajasthan (India) under an engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) model. Each project must be at least 50 MW in capacity. The last date for the submission of bids is 17 September 2020.

The latest auction held by NTPC awarded 1.2 GW of solar power projects under the Interstate Transmission System (ISTS). The auction saw a record low tariff of INR2.43/kWh (US$3.2c/kWh). Overall, NTPC received bids for about 1.7 GW of capacity.

Argentina awards a new concession to ExxonMobil in the Vaca Muerta shale play

The province of Neuquén (Argentina) has awarded the Los Todos II Oeste area concession to ExxonMobil, located in the Vaca Muerta shale play. The Vaca Muerta shale play has estimated gas reserves at around 8,700 bcm and oil reserves at 16.2 Gbl. ExxonMobil is the operator of the block with a 90% stake, together with the provincial oil & gas company Gas y Petróleo del Neuquén.
