Algeria could ban imports of petroleum products from 2021

Algeria plans to quickly diversify its exports in order to reduce its dependence on hydrocarbon sales. According to the government, the share of oil and exports as a share of total trade is expected to decrease from 98% to 80% by end-2021. To achieve that objective, the government will allocate DZD 1,900bn (US$14.84bn) to help finance investment projects for the coming months. In addition to export diversification, the president intends to reduce imports. Imports of fuels will be forbidden from 2021 onward.

Angola has ratified the Paris Agreement

The Angola parliament has ratified the Paris Agreement, which was signed in 2015. The country’s late ratification was due to the need to develop tools to monitor greenhouse gas emissions and delays in the political process. In the meantime, Angola has formulated a climate policy. In addition, the country created a climate observatory and a national monitoring system that provides up-to-date emission data.

The US will authorise oil drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge

The US authorities plan to authorise drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (Alaska), with the objective to auction off oil and gas exploration rights. The first auction could be held on 22 December 2021. The plan includes the construction of four airstrips and major well pads, 280 km of roads, vertical supports for pipelines, a seawater treatment plant, a barge landing and storage site. According to the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), it would not pose an undue threat to the wildlife that depends on the refuge for survival.

SSE selects Vestas turbines for its 443 MW Viking Wind project (UK)

SSE has selected Vestas to supply 103 turbines for its 443 MW Viking onshore wind project in Shetland (Scotland, United Kingdom), which is expected to produce 1.9 TWh/year. In June 2020, SSE took a final investment decision (FID) for the project. SSE’s capital expenditure on the project is estimated to be around £580m (€645m). Construction of the project is expected to start before the end of 2020.

China Three Gorges buys a 500 MW solar portfolio in Spain

The Chinese state-owned power company China Three Gorges (CTG) has reached an agreement with Madrid-based renewables firm X-Elio to acquire a portfolio of 13 solar plants in Spain, with a combined capacity of 500 MW. The solar plants, which are located in Andalusia, Extremadura, Castilla La Mancha, Murcia and Castilla y León, were built in 2019-2020 and are fully operational. The transaction is subject to regulatory approvals, including a foreign investment authorisation, and is expected to close by end-2020.

Kazatomprom (Kazakhstan) extends its 20% uranium production cut until 2022

Kazakhstan’s state-owned uranium extraction and nuclear company Kazatomprom has extended its 20% production cut until the end of 2022, as the uranium market is still recovering from a period of oversupply. The full implementation of this decision would reduce the anticipated global primary supply in 2021 by more than 5,500 tU. Kazatomprom’s 2022 production should be between 22,000 and 22,500 tU, a 20% reduction of the total expected under the Subsoil Use Contract level (27,500-28,000 tU).

Shangai Elec. selects supplier for Mohammed bin Rashid solar project (UAE)

Shangai Electric has selected the JinkoSolar to supply around 1 GW of solar modules for the Mohammed bin Rashid Solar Park in Dubai (United Arab Emirates). In addition to the contract, the two parties signed a strategic partnership agreement to strengthen cooperation in the field of renewables.

Ecuador expects to auction the 596 MW Cardenillo hydro project in 2020

CELEC (Corporación Eléctrica del Ecuador), the Ecuadorian state-owned electric utility, has launched a tender to select an international firm to prepare a feasibility report for the 596 MW Cardenillo hydro project located in the provinces of Morona Santiago and Azuay. The contract would take 180 days. Following the feasibility study, the government would launch a tender for the plant’s concession, which would last 30 years.

European Energy’s 560 MW offshore wind projects in Denmark moves forward

European Energy has notified the Danish authorities of its plans to enter the development phase regarding its Omo South and Jammerland Bay offshore wind projects, which will have a combined capacity of 560 MW and are expected to be commissioned in 2023. The Danish company will initiate technical inspections of the seabed at the project sites.

Germany reduced its GHG emissions by 6.3% in 2019

According to the German government, Germany emitted 35.7% less greenhouse gases (GHG) in 2019 than in 1990, compared with a reduction of 32% in 2018 and 27.5% in 2017. GHG emissions in 2019 thus fell by almost 54 MtCO2eq (-6.3%) in 2019 to around 805 MtCO2eq. The country targets a 40% reduction in GHG emissions by 2020 compared to 1990 levels.
