South Africa cancels permit to install 2 GW of floating gas-fired power capacity
26 Aug 2020The government of South Africa has cancelled an emergency permit awarded to Turkey’s Karpowership to anchor up to five of its floating gas-fired power plants, with a total capacity of 2 GW, in the ports of Durban, Richards Bay, Nqura (Port Elizabeth) and Saldanha Bay.

26 Aug 2020The government of Algeria plans to launch two programmes to develop 1 GW of solar capacity. Each program will have a capacity of 500 MW. As part of the plan, the country is seeking partners to set up solar plants with a capacity between 50 MW and 150 MW. In May 2020, the country presented a plan to develop several solar power plants with a total capacity of 4 GW over the 2020-2024 period, at a cost of US$3.2-3.6bn.

25 Aug 2020The Polish government has released and submitted for consultation a draft regulation on the maximum amount and value of electricity from renewable energy sources that may be sold by auction in 2021. The country plans to auction 2.2 GW of renewables capacity in 2021, including 1.7 GW of solar, 300 MW of wind, 100 MW of biomass and 50 MW of hydro and biogas.

25 Aug 2020The government of South Africa, via its Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE), has issued a request for proposals to procure 2,000 MW of emergency power capacity. Projects under the Risk Mitigation Independent Power Producers Procurement Programme (RMIPPPP) must be fully operational by end-June 2022. The request for proposal is expected to attract investment in the region of ZAR40bn (US$2.3bn).

Saipem signs partnership to develop a 450 MW offshore wind project (Italy)
26 Aug 2020Saipem has signed a memorandum of understanding with Italian renewable companies AGNES and QINT’X to jointly develop a 450 MW offshore wind project in the Adriatic Sea in Northern Italy. The project, which is estimated to cost up to €600m, would comprise the installation of approximately 56 turbines on fixed foundations on the seabed at two different sites. In addition, Saipem could build a similar project in Sicily and Sardinia.
As of August 2020, Italy has only 88 MW of offshore wind capacity in operation.

Gazprom signs deal with Mongolia to start works on Power of Siberia 2 gas pipeline
26 Aug 2020Gazprom has signed a memorandum of intent with the government of Mongolia to create a joint venture, which would be tasked with the development of feasibility studies for the 50 bcm/year Power of Siberia 2 gas pipeline connecting Russia to western China via Mongolia. In May 2020, Gazprom started a feasibility study for the project.

26 Aug 2020MHPS (Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems) has received an order for three gas turbines generators to be used in a 2.4 GW CCGT power project in Fujairah (United Arab Emirates). In February 2020, the Abu Dhabi Power Corporation (ADPower) formed a joint venture with Marubeni Corporation (60% ADPower and 40% Marubeni) to develop a 2.4 GW CCGT power plant.

26 Aug 2020Norway’s Equinor has signed an agreement for lease with The Crown Estate (UK) to expand its 616 MW Sheringham Shoal offshore wind plant by 317 MW and its 402 MW Dudgeon offshore wind plant by 402 MW, securing an area of seabed of approximately 196 km2 in total.

JAPEX (Japan) fully commissions its 1.2 GW LNG-to-power project
26 Aug 2020Japan Petroleum Exploration (JAPEX) has commissioned the second unit of the Fukushima Natural Gas Power Plant and a 230,000 m3 LNG storage tan, located at Soma Port in Shinchi Town, Fukushima Prefecture (Japan). The unit has capacity of 590 MW and use liquefied natural for fuel. The first 590 MW unit of the plant entered commercial operation by end-April 2020.

26 Aug 2020Polish energy group Tauron has synchronised its 450 MW Stalowa Wola CCGT-CHP plant to the Polish grid. The project, which required PLN1.5bn (€340m) in investments, was developed by a joint venture between Tauron (50%) and Polish state-owned oil & gas group PGNiG (50%). The plant was originally expected to be commissioned in 2016.
Gas accounts for 8% of Poland’s installed capacity, with 3.5 GW. Around 0.9 GW of gas power projects are currently under construction and 6 GW under development.
