Egypt plans to issue a licence for the Dabaa nuclear project in 2021
27 Aug 2020The Nuclear Power Plants Authority (NPPA) of Egypt plans to issue a licence to build the first unit of El Dabaa nuclear power project. The project will be implemented by Russian nuclear company Rosatom in the second half of 2021. This permit will allow Rosatom to start preparation for concreting the foundations of installations. The first reactor is expected to be operational in 2026.

27 Aug 2020The government of Portugal has published the result of its latest solar auction, which took place on 24 and 25 August 2020. Of the 700 MW available for auction, distributed over 12 lots, located in the Alentejo and the Algarve, 670 MW were awarded. The projects included 483 MW with an energy storage element built in, 177 MW under the country’s system compensation and 10 MW under contract for difference modality.

26 Aug 2020The government of Algeria plans to launch two programmes to develop 1 GW of solar capacity. Each program will have a capacity of 500 MW. As part of the plan, the country is seeking partners to set up solar plants with a capacity between 50 MW and 150 MW. In May 2020, the country presented a plan to develop several solar power plants with a total capacity of 4 GW over the 2020-2024 period, at a cost of US$3.2-3.6bn.

Omega Geração acquires stake in two EDF Renewables wind plants (Brazil)
27 Aug 2020Brazilian renewable company Omega Geração has signed a binding agreement to acquire a 50% stake in two wind plants with a total capacity of 182.6 MW from EDF Renewables. The Ventos da Bahia 1 and 2 wind plants are valued at BRL662m (US$118m) and Omega Geração will pay 55% in cash and the rest by taking over longer-term debt. The two wind plants were commissioned in 2017 and are the first tranche of a wind complex with a capacity of 800 MW.

27 Aug 2020The German renewable company wdp has signed supply agreements for its 350 MW Guanyin offshore wind project in Taiwan. The 36 turbines of the V164 type will be delivered by MHI Vestas Offshore Wind. Construction should start once the remaining permits are issued by the Taiwanese government. The project is expected to be commissioned in 2022.
In April 2020, wdp created a joint venture with Taiwan Green Power (LeaLea Group) to jointly develop the offshore wind park site No. 28 with a planned capacity of 600 MW off the coast of Changhua.

India intends to halve its coal imports by 2025
27 Aug 2020India intends to reduce its coal imports by 51-55% by 2025. In the fiscal year to March 2020, the country spent INR1,580bn (US$21.3bn) to import 247 Mt of coal, including 197 Mt of thermal coal. According to the Ministry of Coal, India could substitute between 110-120 Mt of imported coal with its own production.

JERA seeks approval to develop a 520 MW offshore wind project (Japan)
27 Aug 2020JERA, the joint venture between the Japanese power utilities TEPCO and Chubu Electric, has submitted a planning phase environmental impact statement for the 520 MW Ishikari Bay offshore wind project, located 2.5km offshore from the cities of Ishikari and Otaru, to the Minister of Economy, Trade, and Industry. Construction of the plant is expected to take 3 years.

27 Aug 2020Competitive Power Ventures (CPV), together with GE Energy Financial Services, Osaka Gas USA, Axium Infrastructure, and Harrison Street, has reached financial closing on its 1,250 MW CPV Three Rivers Energy Center (CPV Three Rivers) CCGT project in Grundy County, Illinois (United States). The project will require US$1.3bn in investments. Construction will begin shortly, and commissioning is expected in 2023.
In December 2019, CPV commissioned a 1,050 MW CCGT power project in Pennsylvania (US). The CPV Fairview Energy Center (CPV Fairview) required US$1bn.
