Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania to cut power trade with Belarus and Russia
3 Sep 2020The government of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania have signed an agreement on the functioning of energy trade with third countries after the start-up of the Ostrovets nuclear power plant in Belarus, which is located 20 km away from the Lithuanian border.

3 Sep 2020The Brazilian Chamber of Deputies has approved the draft of the new Natural Gas Law, which intends to open the market to the private sector and end the monopoly held by national oil & gas company Petrobras. The exploitation of gas pipelines will pass from the concession regime, with public bidding, to authorizations. In addition, the text prevents vertical integration in the production of natural gas. The bill is expected to reduce the price of gas in Brazil and to unleash BRL40bn (US$7.5bn) in private investment for the gas sector.

Mainstream reaches financial close for 630 MW solar and wind projects in Chile
3 Sep 2020Mainstream Renewable Power has reached financial for second phase of its 1.3 GW Andes Renovables wind and solar project in Chile, which comprises three wind projects with a total capacity of 425 MW and two solar projects with a total capacity of 205 MW. The five projects are expected to enter commercial operation in 2021-2022.

3 Sep 2020Siemens Gamesa has secured a 301 MW wind turbines contract for the Boujdour wind farm in Morocco. The company will supply, transport, install, commission and test 87 3.4-132 machines for the project. Commissioning is expected in 2022.
In November 2019, in partnership with Enel Green Power and Siemens, Nareva Holdings (an affiliate of investment fund Al Mada) signed a contract with the National Electricity and Drinking Water Board (ONEE) and the Moroccan Agency for Sustainable Energy (Masen) to develop the 301 MW Boujdour wind park, for a total investment of US$414m.

2 Sep 2020Ørsted has completed the sales of its Danish power distribution business (Radius), residential customer business, and City Light business to Danish energy company SEAS-NVE. The transaction includes Ørsted’s Radius, which supplies electricity to 1 million homes and businesses in the Copenhagen area, North Zealand and parts of Central Zealand via an electricity network of approximately 19,000 km. It also includes Ørsted’s private customers business (717,000 electricity customers and 105,000 gas customers) and outdoor lighting operation and maintenance business.

BUA Group plans to build a 200 kb/d refinery in Nigeria
3 Sep 2020The Nigerian conglomerate BUA Group has selected Axens to licence technologies for its 200 kb/d refinery project in Nigeria, which should be operational by 2024. The refinery will produce high-quality gasoline, diesel, jet fuel meeting Euro-V specifications for the Nigerian market and the larger region.

3 Sep 2020The UK-based renewable developer eleQtra has started building its 120 MW Namaacha wind project in Mozambique, near the capital city of Maputo. The project, which will cost US$280m, will supply electricity to the grid operated by state-owned electric utility Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM). In July 2018, the US Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) awarded a grant to eleQtra to develop its Namaacha project. As of August 2020, hydro accounts for 70% of Mozambique’s installed capacity, with 2.2 GW, followed by gas (660 MW, 21%).

3 Sep 2020A US court has rejected a challenge to the federal approval of the 2.1 bcf/d (21.7 bcm/year) Permian Highway natural gas pipeline. The 430 miles (692 km) pipeline links up the Waha area in Texas to the US Gulf Coast and Mexico markets. The project has an estimated cost of US$2bn and is 90% complete. Kinder Morgan Texas Pipeline (KMTP), which is leading the project and will operate the pipeline, expects to commission the pipeline in early 2021. Other shareholders include Exxon Mobil, Altus Midstream and Blackstone Group’s EagleClaw Midstream Ventures.
