Poland mulls cutting the share of coal in its power mix to 37% in 2030

The Ministry of Climate of Poland has released an update of its energy strategy by 2040. It intends to reduce the share of coal in its power generation to 37% in 2030 (up to 56% in the worst scenario) and to 11% in 2040 (28% in the worst scenario). The policy document is yet to be approved by the Council of Ministers. A previous draft, released in November 2019, targeted a decrease of coal’s share in power generation to 56%-60% in 2030 and to 28% in 2040. In 2019, power generation from coal and lignite accounted for almost 3/4 of the total power mix.

Ecuador launches a tender for 200 MW of renewables capacity

The Ministry of Energy and Non-Renewable Natural Resources of Ecuador has launched a tender for 24 hydropower, wind, and biomass projects, with a total capacity of 200 MW. The government, which intends to attract US$300m in private investment, will announce the winners within 237 business days.

South Korea intends to close 30 coal-fired power plants by 2034

The government of South Korean plans to shut down 10 existing coal-fired power plants by 2022, and another 20 by 2034, in a bid to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and to promote renewable energy sources. Four coal-fired units have already been closed, namely Yeongdong Units 1 and 2 (325 MW) and Seocheon Units 1 and 2 (400 MW).

Mexico plans to stop exporting crude oil in 2024

Mexico intends to stop exporting crude oil abroad by 2024. The government plans to leave greater reserves at the end of the mandate (2024) than those that were registered at the time of initiation (2018) and will seek not to overexploit oil resources. Consequently, it proposes to produce only what is needed for domestic consumption, to process its entire production in the country – thus stopping exporting crude oil – and to reach self-sufficiency in petroleum products.

J-Power, JERA, Equinor will jointly bid for offshore wind projects (Japan)

Electric Power Development (J-Power), JERA, the joint venture between the Japanese power utilities TEPCO and Chubu Electric, and Equinor have created a consortium to jointly evaluate and work towards submitting a bid for offshore wind power projects in Akita Prefecture off Noshiro City, Mitane Town, and Oga City, and off Yurihonjo City.

Brazil clears Omega’s acquisition of a 583 MW wind portfolio

The Brazilian Administrative Council for Economic Defence (CADE) has approved the sale by state-owned power utility Eletrobras of a 583 MW wind portfolio in Rio Grande do Sul to Omega Geração.

SEC (Saudi Arabia) plans to connect 4.2 GW of renewable capacity by 2021

Saudi Arabia’s state-owned power utility Saudi Electricity Company (SEC) intends to invest SAR797m (over US$210m) to integrate 4.2 GW of renewable capacity to the grid by 2021. The power projects to be connected to the grid by 2021 include the 400 MW Doumat Al-Jandal wind project, the 2,000 MW Sudair solar power project along with the 300 MW Rabigh, 600 MW Al Faisaliah, 200 MW Al-Qurayyat, 300 MW South Jeddah, 50 MW Madina and 20 MW Rafah solar power projects.

Enel completes turbines installation at 274 MW wind project (Mexico)

Enel Green Power has completed the installation of wind turbines at its 274 MW Dolores onshore wind project, located in the city of China, Nuevo Leon (Mexico). The US$290m power plant, which is supported a 15-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with the National Energy Control Centre (CENACE), is expected to generate 938 GWh/year. In addition, the project received clean energy certificates for 20 years.

The UK rejects Banks Group’s Druridge Bay opencast coal mine project

The UK government has refused planning permission for the Druridge Bay opencast coal mine near the Northumberland coast (United Kingdom). The mining project, developed by the Banks Group, would have produced 3 Mt of coal. The original application was submitted in October 2015 and rejected in October 2018.

Powergrid commissions a 1.5 GW HVDC power transmission line in India

The state-owned Power Grid Corporation of India (Powergrid) has commissioned the first phase of the 6,000 MW Raigarh Pugalur high voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission project in India. The first phase of the project comprises a 1,765 km, 800 kV HVDC transmission line between Raigarh (Chhattisgarh, central India) and Pugalur (Tamil Nadu, southern India), with a transmission capacity of 1.5 GW.
