The Nigerian president proposes a new Petroleum Industry Bill
30 Sep 2020The Nigerian president has submitted a new Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB) to the National Assembly. The bill proposes to transform the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) into a limited company that would be incorporated by the Ministry of Petroleum.

30 Sep 2020According to the government, Vietnam will have to invest US$96bn in new power plants and US$37bn in power transmission networks over the next decade, as electricity demand is forecast to increase by 8.6%/year during the 2021-2025 period and by 7.2%/year in the 2026-2030 period. The government plans to boost the country’s installed capacity to 138 GW by 2030, from 49 GW at the end of 2019 and around 56 GW currently.

29 Sep 2020The Danish Energy Agency has launched the tendering process for the Thor offshore wind project, with a capacity of 800-1000 MW. The project, which will be located in the North Sea at least 20 km from the coast. The total investment costs for Thor are estimated at a total of DKK15.5bn (€2.1bn) and the project is expected to be fully commissioned and connected to the grid by 2027 at the latest. The final tender deadline for the tender is expected to be 8 November 2021. The authorization is given for 30 years with the possibility of extension for 5 years.

29 Sep 2020The government of Ecuador has authorised the US project development company Sycar and other private companies to import gasoline, natural gas, industrial gas, diesel, jet fuel, avgas, absorbents, and other derivatives in the country. Sycar intends to build an LNG import terminal in Ecuador, which would include a floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) with an initial capacity of 0.5 bcm/year.

Iraq signs a 1 TWh/year power purchase agreement with Jordan
30 Sep 2020Iraq has signed an agreement to connect its power transmission grid with that of Jordan and to buy electricity from its neighbour. Jordan will provide Iraq with 1 TWh/year in the first phase of the project starting within 26 months after the date of the contract (by December 2022). The two countries can agree to increase the capacity on a later stage. In 2019, Iraq imported 3.1 TWh of electricity (7% of total consumption), mainly from Iran. In June 2020, the two countries reached a two-year power supply deal worth US$800m.

Russia’s Gazprom forecasts a 15% drop in gas sales to Europe in 2020
30 Sep 2020Gazprom anticipates a nearly 15% decline in its gas sales to Europe from 199 bcm in 2019 to 170 bcm in 2020. In addition, the company’s average gas price in Europe is expected to reach US$130/1,000 cm in 2020.

30 Sep 2020The Norwegian state-owned energy group Statkraft plans to build a 519 MW onshore wind project in the Bahia state of Brazil, which would require a BRL2.5bn (US$445m) investment. The Ventos de Santa Eugenia project will include 14 wind parks with 91 Nordex wind turbines of 5.7 MW each. The wind project is part of the first phase of the 1.1 GW Ibipeba wind complex, along with the Serra de Mangabeira wind park. It is expected to enter construction in January 2021 and to be fully commissioned in 2023.

30 Sep 2020The Australian energy infrastructure company Jemena (60% State Grid Corporation of China, 40% Singapore Power) plans to extend its 797 km-long Eastern Gas Pipeline (EGP) by 185 km from Horsley Park in Sydney to the Hunter Valley in Australia, where it would connect to existing domestic gas fields and proposed LNG import terminals at Port Kembla and Newcastle.

30 Sep 2020The US Army Corp of Engineers has awarded a Nationwide Permit 12, which allows the crossing of waterbodies, to Mountain Valley Pipeline (MVP), which is building a 1.9 bcf/d (20 bcm/year) gas pipeline from Wetzel County (West Virginia) to Pittsylvania County (Virginia) (United States). In addition, the US$5.4bn gas pipeline project has received a draft supplemental environmental impact from the US Forest Service Bureau of Land Management. Consequently, MVP has asked to Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) for permission to resume construction.
