India receive 82 bids for 23 mines in its first-ever coal auction
2 Oct 2020India’s first-ever tender to commercially mine and sell coal has received 82 bids from 46 companies for 23 coal mines, while a total of 38 coal mines were put for auction. The remaining 15 mines did not receive any bid. Adani Group has bid for 9 mines and Hinalco Industries for 5 mines. As much as 65% of all the bidders do not run industries that require coal, which means that these companies are primarily interested in commercial sale of the fuel.

2 Oct 2020The Danish Energy Agency has granted an operations permit to Nord Stream 2 for laying the 55 bcm/year Nord Stream 2 pipeline on the Danish continental shelf on a number of conditions to ensure a safe operation of the project. The gas pipeline starts in Russia, passes through Finnish, Swedish, Danish and German marine areas; regulatory authorities in Russia, Finland, Sweden, Germany, and Denmark have all granted permits for the project.

1 Oct 2020The Danish government estimates that the cost to meet its 2030 climate target of reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 70% from 1990 levels (around 20 MtCO2eq) could reach DKK16-24bn (€2.1-3.2bn) by 2030, i.e. 0.7-1% of gross domestic product. Initiatives launched in 2019 will reduce emissions in 2030 by around 5 MtCO2eq, and the government plans to cut another 9-16.5 MtCO2eq by using new technologies such as carbon capture storage (CCS), biofuels, electrification and ‘power-to-X’.

1 Oct 2020The Ukrainian president has signed a decree that instructs the government to submit bills on the country’s nuclear industry to the parliament. The bills would concern the location, design, and construction of power units 3 and 4 of the Khmelnytskyi nuclear power plant, and the development of a long-term programme for nuclear energy as part of the Energy Strategy of Ukraine for the period up to 2035.

ZE PAK plans to close 1.1 GW of lignite-fired capacity by 2030 (Poland)
2 Oct 2020Polish electric utility ZE PAK plans to shut down 1.1 GW of lignite-fired capacity by 2030. The company will start by closing the unit 5 (200 MW) at the Pątnów I plant in 2023, followed by the unit 1 and 2 (444 MW) at the Pątnów I plant in 2024 and the unit 9 (474 MW) at the Pątnów II plant in 2029. In addition, ZE PAK will close its four lignite mines by 2030, starting by Adamów in 2020, followed by Jóźwin in 2021, Drzewce in 2022 and Tomisławice in 2029. The company intends to replace coal-fired capacity with renewables.

2 Oct 2020The US energy group Vistra has announced plans to cut its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 60% by 2030 compared to a 2010 baseline and to achieve net-zero CO2 emissions by 2050. The group plans to close 7 Luminant coal-fired power plants totalling more than 6.8 GW of coal-fired capacity by 2027 in Illinois and Ohio (United States).

Spain’s Energia Aljaval plans to build a 300 MW solar plant in Mexico
2 Oct 2020Energia Aljaval, a Spanish renewable project developer, plans to develop a 300 MW solar PV plant in Chihuahua state (Mexico). The Alsacia solar project, which will be able to generate 840 GWh/year, is expected to be connected to the national grid by end-2021. The Spanish company owns eight solar plants in Mexico, representing a total capacity of 663 MW, and intends to develop 9 additional solar projects with a total capacity of 1.8 GW.
Mexico’s total capacity reaches 84 GW (2019) and includes 4.4 GW of solar (5%).

2 Oct 2020EDEN Renewables India, the equally-owned joint venture between EDF Renewables and Total Eren, has been awarded three solar projects with a total capacity of 1,350 MWp in Rajasthan, in Northern India. Two 450 MWp solar projects were awarded to EDEN Renewables India during the last tenders organised by the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI VIII and SECI IX).

2 Oct 2020SIMEC Energy Group, an affiliate of GFG Alliance, has signed an agreement with the Spanish developer Ignis to develop 1.2 GW of solar and wind power projects in Spain. The wind projects will be located in Galicia, in northern Spain, while the solar projects will be spread across Spain. The renewable projects are expected to be operational in 2023.

2 Oct 2020ECSW, the 50:50 joint venture of the Polish energy groups Tauron and PGNiG, has commissioned its 450 MW Stalowa Wola CCGT power project in Poland, with an initial capacity of 330 MW to be ramped up to 450 MW by the end of the year. The project, which required PLN1.5bn (€335m) in investments, was originally expected to be commissioned in 2016. It was built at the Stalowa Wola CHP plant and will replace existing 120 MW units.
