Poland will take over nuclear development firm PGE EJ 1 by end-2020

The Polish State Treasury has signed a letter of intent (LoI) with the 57.4% state-owned power utility PGE Polska Grupa Energetyczna to acquire 100% of PGE EJ 1, a special purpose vehicle (SPV) in charge of the development of Poland’s first nuclear power plant. PGE EJ 1 is owned by PGE (70%), ENEA, KGHM Polska Miedź and TAURON Polska Energia (10% each). The transaction is expected to close by end-2020.

India receive 82 bids for 23 mines in its first-ever coal auction

India’s first-ever tender to commercially mine and sell coal has received 82 bids from 46 companies for 23 coal mines, while a total of 38 coal mines were put for auction. The remaining 15 mines did not receive any bid. Adani Group has bid for 9 mines and Hinalco Industries for 5 mines. As much as 65% of all the bidders do not run industries that require coal, which means that these companies are primarily interested in commercial sale of the fuel.

Denmark grants an operations permit for the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline

The Danish Energy Agency has granted an operations permit to Nord Stream 2 for laying the 55 bcm/year Nord Stream 2 pipeline on the Danish continental shelf on a number of conditions to ensure a safe operation of the project. The gas pipeline starts in Russia, passes through Finnish, Swedish, Danish and German marine areas; regulatory authorities in Russia, Finland, Sweden, Germany, and Denmark have all granted permits for the project.

Lithuania’s Amber Grid will invest €256m over 2020-25 in the gas grid

Lithuania’s National Energy Regulatory Council (NERC) has approved Amber Grid’s ten-year gas transmission network development plan, which aims at diversifying gas supply sources in the country and ensuring the reliability of the grid. Investments in the gas transmission network are planned to reach €229m over the next five years, of which half will be for finalising the gas pipeline interconnection between Lithuania and Poland. Amber Grid could also to connect biomethane production systems and hydrogen transportation technologies to the grid.

Eneos permanently shuts down its 115 kb/d Osaka refinery (Japan)

The Japanese oil refinery Eneos Holdings, formerly JXTG Nippon Oil & Energy, has permanently shut down its 115,000 bbl/d refinery in Osaka (Japan), as announced in July 2019, due to decreasing demand for oil products in Japan and fiercer competition in Asia.

EU grants €720m to a new Baltic electric interconnection project

EU Member States have agreed with the European Commission’s proposal to invest €998m from the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) programme in major European energy infrastructure projects aimed at improving competitiveness, enhancing the EU’s security of energy supply, and promoting safe, secure and efficient network operations.

China connects to the grid a 2.2 GW solar project

Huanghe Hydropower Development, a subsidiary of the Chinese state-owned State Power Investment Corporation (SPIC), has connected a 2.2 GW solar plant in a desert in the Qinghai province (north-western China) to the grid. The CNY15bn (US$2.2bn) project also includes 203 MW/MWh of storage capacity. Construction started in November 2019 and was completed in September 2020. The solar project is connected to an ultra high-voltage (8 GW) power line built by State grid of China to connect northwestern provinces to the eastern provinces across Qinghai, Gansu, Shaanxi and Henan provinces.

ExxonMobil’s LNG-to-power project in Vietnam gets first approval

The People’s Committee of Haiphong (Vietnam) has approved ExxonMobil’s 6 Mt/year LNG import terminal and 2,250 MW gas-fired power plant projects, which would require an investment of US$5.1bn. The LNG-to-power project, which is scheduled to enter production in 2026-2027, could be expanded to 4.5 GW by 2029-2030.

Repsol connects its 335 MW Delta wind project to the Spanish power grid

The Spanish oil and gas group Repsol has connected the first wind turbines at the 335 MW Delta wind project in Aragon, northern Spain, to the power grid. The Delta wind complex is made up of 8 wind parks, located in the Zaragoza and Teruel provinces, with a total of 89 wind turbines. The project, which required an investment of €300m, is scheduled to be commissioned by end-2020 and should generate 992 GWh/year.

ERS and Serbia’s EPS plan 180 MW hydro project (Bosnia and Herzegovina)

The Commission for Protection of Competition of Serbia has authorised state-owned power utility Elektroprivreda Srbije (EPS) to create a joint venture with Elektroprivreda Republike Srpske (ERS) for the construction of the 180 MW Gornja Drina hydropower project in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The project includes Buk Bijela (93 MW), Foča (44 MW) and Paunci (43 MW). EPS would own 51% of the Hidroelektroenergetski sistem Gornja Drina joint venture and ERS the remaining 49%. Construction is expected to start in 2021, and commissioning is scheduled for 2023.
