On Monday, fourteen countries presented their voluntary national reviews (VNRs): Nepal, Georgia, Nigeria, Kenya, Uganda, Bangladesh, India, Morocco, Niger, Panama, Benin, Costa Rica, Peru, and Argentina. English

HLPF 2020
The High-level Political Forum concluded without adopting a ministerial declaration. Mona Juul, President of the UN Economic and Social Council, said an ambitious declaration was emerging, but some issues required further discussion. Suggesting countries were close to an agreement, she encouraged all Member States to support its adoption by consensus. Read

During the 8 days of the virtual June Momentum for Climate Change, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) convened 17 open events and six additional events requiring registration, including meetings of the constituted bodies. English

Parties and international organizations shared lessons from work to prepare new and updated nationally determined contributions (NDCs) in 2020, highlighting the need for political will, stakeholder engagement, and policy mainstreaming. The Local Communities and Indigenous Peoples Platform Facilitative Working Group shared updates on activities and heard inputs from stakeholders.” Read
Monaco Blue Initiative
A workshop, addressing the role of community-led initiatives in the management and preservation of marine protected areas, focused on, among other things: support for ecologically-determined fish markets; the need for private investors include natural capital in their business strategies; and the importance of marine spatial planning, environmental impact assessments, and nature-based solutions when designing blue economy models. On Monday, parties and stakeholders shared updates on Koronivia Joint Work on Agriculture workshops, commending their usefulness for knowledge sharing, with some calling for moving to implementation. Virtual event discusses role of smallholder farmers in promoting land restoration activities, with subsessions on: soils and the UN Decade for Ecosystem Restoration; soil organic carbon, and how smallholder farming communities benefit from carbon sequestration projects; and measuring progress on gender and land tenure. 58th GEF Council Meeting
The Global Environment Facility Council’s 58th meeting appointed a new CEO and Chairperson. Carlos Manuel Rodríguez, Costa Rica’s Environment and Energy Minister, will lead the GEF, with Naoko Ishii leaving after eight years. The GEF Council also agreed a work program with resources totaling USD 645.4 million. The GEF Council met online for the first time due to COVID-19. English
