111 Heads of State and Government and 14 Ministers virtually addressed the official commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the United Nations, which took place at a socially-distanced UN Headquarters, on the theme of “The future we want, the United Nations we need: Reaffirming our collective commitment to multilateralism.” Read

SDG Action Zone: Planet
Planet day contained touching stories of how disasters like typhoons and now COVID-19 magnify the inequalities and problems of the existing, “broken” social and economic systems. Participants managed to humanize climate change and made it more relatable. Read

Global leaders will showcase the social and economic benefits of a sustainable recovery and of action to limit global warming to 1.5°C by achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050. Read

Government and civil society representatives will consider how the nature-based safety net can provide a solution to current interlinked global climate, biodiversity, health, and inequality crises, and will developkey messages to be fed into UN biodiversity-related discussions. Read

Special Virtual Sessions for the Convention on Biological Diversity
On the final day of the virtual sessions, participants discussed the new draft of the post-2020 global biodiversity framework. But not everyone is pleased with it. Yet the four days of sessions provided the opportunity to maintain momentum heading into the UN Biodiversity Summit on 30 September. Read
