In view of impacts of COVID-19 pandemic on GEF projects, Council Members approved the decision for exceptional, time-bound authorization to the GEF CEO to extend project timelines by 24 months. They also adopted decisions on the Private Sector Engagement Strategy, on extending the mandate of the Working Group on Governance to 30 January 2022, and the Update on the Nagoya Protocol Implementation Fund.Read

GEF 59 Council Members discussed reports by the Independent Evaluation Office (IEO), including GEF support in fragile and conflict-affected situations; interventions in the artisanal and small-scale gold mining sector; role of medium-sized projects in the GEF partnership; and knowledge management. They took note COVID-19 has not had a major detrimental effect on the evaluations.Read

In his first opening statement to the GEF Council as GEF CEO and Chairperson, Carlos Manuel Rodríguez noted the pandemic has put urgent short-term economic recovery at the top of government agendas and emphasized the importance of seizing this “once-in-a-lifetime chance” to address global challenges in an integrated way.Read
UN Climate Change Dialogues 2020
Friday concluded the two-week long event and provided space for reflecting on progress made during the Dialogues and look ahead to the Glasgow Climate Change Conference in 2021. Parties and observers highlighted the Dialogues provided space to advance discussions on a number of issues, albeit noting participation constraints related to time zone conflicts and connectivity issues, among others. On Wednesday, the Dialogues considered food security dimensions of climate change in the agricultural sector, common time frames for Nationally Determined Contributions, and climate change education, among others. In an informal event, Heads of Delegation shared views on key finance-related issues. Read
UN Climate Change Dialogues 2020
The fourth day of the Dialogues considered the long-term global goal, biodiversity and climate change adaptation, and transparency, among other topics. Participants also heard about the achievements of the Technical Examination Processes on mitigation and adaptation, and the enhanced Lima Work Programme on Gender. Read
12th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer (Part I) and 32nd Meeting of the Parties to the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer
On the penultimate day, delegates continued discussing budgets, replenishment of the Multilateral Fund and membership of the Technology and Economic Assessment Panel. They also agreed on extending the deadline to sign the Rome Declaration. Read
UN Climate Change Dialogues 2020
The second day of the Dialogues featured events on transparency, science, agriculture, and finance. The Standing Committee on Finance provided an update on the preparation of much anticipated reports, including one on the needs of developing country parties related to implementing the Convention and the Paris Agreement.Read
12th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer (Part I) and 32nd Meeting of the Parties to the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer
Delegates considered the membership of the Montreal Protocol bodies, including the appointment of members to the Technology and Economic Assessment Panel (TEAP) and its Technical Options Committees (TOCs). The Budget Committee and the Multilateral Fund Replenishment Contact Group also met to continue deliberations. Read

Faculty of Environmental and Urban Change
The Faculty of Environmental and Urban Change (EUC), York University, invites highly qualified candidates to apply for a professorial stream tenure-track appointment in Black Studies in Geography and Environment at the Assistant Professor level, to commence July 1, 2021. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. All York University positions are subject to budgetary approval.
This opportunity is open to qualified individuals who self-identify as Black peoples of African Descent (e.g., Africans and African heritage people from the Caribbean, Americas, Europe). Recognizing the underrepresentation of Black faculty, this opportunity is to support the University’s Affirmative Action program and has been developed based on the special program provisions of the Ontario Human Rights Code. The position is part of a cohort hire of fourteen new colleagues across York University. 56th Session of the International Tropical Timber Council and Associated Sessions of the Committees (ITTC-56)
During its week-long session, the Council adopted five decisions and approved financing projects, pre-projects, and activities. The decisions include a new Biennial Work Programme, the next phase in the New Financing Architecture, the extension of the Strategic Plan, and the selection of the next Executive Director for the International Tropical Timber Organization. 4th Meeting of the Ad-hoc Open-ended Expert Group on Marine Litter and Microplastics (AHEG-4)
As the meeting concluded, participants agreed to the Chair’s summary, which was hailed as a neutral and factual document, containing a non-exhaustive list of response options to marine litter and microplastics. They annexed the summary to the report of the meeting, which will be presented to the United Nations Environment Assembly. Read

56th Session of the International Tropical Timber Council and Associated Sessions of the Committees (ITTC-56)
On its third day, the Council focused primarily on the development of the initial phase of the International Tropical Timber Organization’s (ITTO) New Financing Architecture (NFA) aimed at improving ITTO’s financing infrastructure and fundraising strategies. Read
4th Meeting of the Ad-hoc Open-ended Expert Group on Marine Litter and Microplastics (AHEG-4)
Many delegates supported the expansion of existing voluntary agreements addressing marine litter, highlighting ongoing work under the Osaka Blue Ocean Vision and the G20 Implementation Framework for Actions on Marine Plastic Litter. Read
56th Session of the International Tropical Timber Council and Associated Sessions of the Committees (ITTC-56)
In its second day, delegations considered possibly extending the International Tropical Timber Agreement, 2006 for five more years and reviewed the implementation of the first phase of the International Tropical Timber Organization’s new programmatic approach to financing and fundraising. Read

16th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Intergovernmental Forum on Mining, Minerals, Metals and Sustainable Development (IGF)
The 16th AGM discussed the impacts of COVID-19 on various aspects of mining, including employment, community resilience, gender equality, artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM), climate action, resource taxation, and technological innovation. Read
