Rethinking economic growth in the age of ecological constraints

Summary

The main purpose of this article is to discuss the social meaning of economic growth in the age of ecological constraints. Nowadays, the big size of the global economy in relation of its surrounding ecosystem has transformed natural resources and ecological services into the really scarce goods. The real and actual context of the challenge of economic growth is climate change, and the article explores the relationships between both. It tries to answer the question of why human society has not been able to reduce its emission of carbon dioxide despite the fact that climate change is turning out to be more risky.

El propósito principal de este artículo es discutir el significado del crecimiento económico en la era de restricciones económicas. En nuestros días el enorme tamaño de la economía global, en relación con los ecosistemas circundantes, ha hecho que los recursos naturales y los servicios ecológicos sean los verdaderos bienes escasos. El contexto de fondo de este desafío al crecimiento económico es el cambio climático, y este artículo explora las relaciones entre ambos. Se intenta responder a la pregunta de por qué la sociedad humana no ha sido capaz de reducir sus emisiones de bióxido de carbono no obstante el hecho que el cambio climático está resultando cada vez mayor riesgo.
