Regular Track Submissions

DEADLINE IS FRIDAY!

February 17 is the final date for submission of Regular Tracks for the ISEE Biennial Conference in Colombia

For this conference, we have adopted a bottom-up approach, and we look for the active participation of members of the ecological economics community to have a wide-ranging conference.

A regular track is just a series of sessions around a theme, that you can chair. You can choose the subject. We will have a second call for abstracts, and people will then choose the tracks for their submissions.

Ecological Economics Call for Papers

Biodiversity and Finance: Risk, Disclosure and Double Materiality

This special issue will investigate the way in which material nature-related risks are reflected in financial assets including sovereign debt, and the impact of investments and corporate activities on nature, biodiversity and ecosystem services. The special issue will evaluate the extent to which these dual aspects of nature-based risks, the double materiality, can be adequately reflected and whether mechanisms such as disclosure (e.g. via the Taskforce on Nature Related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) or Taskforce on Climate Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD), ESG and other ratings, can influence the allocation of capital to lessen the effect of economic activity on nature and biodiversity and induce sustainability. We invite empirical, theoretical and think-piece papers on all aspects concerning biodiversity and the financial sector ranging from the perceptions and demands of individual investors, the role of asset managers, the metrics with which nature-based risks are measured, the implications for portfolio management and the legality of focusing on ESG criteria rather than the more narrow fiduciary duties of companies and asset managers of maximizing financial returns for shareholders and investors.

Deforestation-free trade: Global governance challenges and socio-environmental implications in producing countries

Intensification of deforestation in tropical countries associated with commodities exports has spurred recent high-level commitments and agreements among governments and firms. These attempts at governance innovations show a current interest, particularly in high-income countries, in achieving deforestation-free flows. For instance, in November 2021, the European Commission launched a proposal for a regulation to attain deforestation-free products, which aims to end deforestation and forest degradation associated with international supply chains of key agricultural commodities consumed in Europe. In addition, there is currently a bill under discussion in the U.S. Congress (the U.S. Forest Act) that, if approved, will hold international suppliers of commodities to the American market accountable for illegal deforestation in the places where plantations are located. International trade of commodities associated with deforestation risks is of course shaped to a large extent by financial flows. In the UN Climate Change Conference in Glasgow, in 2021, leaders of 141 countries signed a declaration on forest and land use, committing, among other things, to “facilitate the alignment of financial flows with international goals to reverse forest loss and degradation” by 2030. Also in the Glasgow COP26, over 30 financial institutions, representing assets over US $ 4.5 trillion, committed to eliminating deforestation driven by the production and exports of agricultural commodities from their investment and lending portfolios by 2025.

The ISEE Journal, Ecological Economics

The journal is concerned with extending and integrating the understanding of the interfaces and interplay between «nature’s household» (ecosystems) and «humanity’s household» (the economy).

Ecological economics is an interdisciplinary field defined by a set of concrete problems or challenges related to governing economic activity in a way that promotes human well-being, sustainability, and justice. The journal thus emphasizes critical work that draws on and integrates elements of ecological science, economics, and the analysis of values, behaviors, cultural practices, institutional structures, and societal dynamics.

The journal is transdisciplinary in spirit and methodologically open, drawing on the insights offered by a variety of intellectual traditions, and appealing to a diverse readership.
