Fiddler’s Ferry and Aberthaw B coal-fired power plants shut down (UK)

SSE has closed the remaining units of its Fiddler’s Ferry coal-fired power plant in Warrington, Cheshire (United Kingdom). The power units, totalling around 1.5 GW, were idle and were the last remaining coal-fired units operated by SSE.

Brazil’s Eletrobras plans to invest US$6.2bn by 2024

According to its Business and Management Master Plan 2020-2024, Brazilian state-owned power utility Eletrobras plans to invest BRL32.4bn (US$6.2bn) over the period 2020-2024. Around 65% of this amount will be invested in power generation, including BRL13.9bn (US$2.7bn) in the Angra 3 nuclear power project (nearly 43% of total investments). In addition, Eletrobras will invest BRL9.4bn (US$1.8bn) in electricity transmission, and BRL1.8bn (US$346m) in infrastructure and environmental works. The plan was prepared before the Covid-19 epidemic in Brazil.

Saudi Arabia plans to increase oil exports to 10.6 mb/d from May 2020

Saudi Arabia plans to ramp up its crude oil exports by 600 kb/d to reach a total of 10.6 mb/d from May 2020. To reach this objective, the country plans to reduce the consumption of domestic oil in power generation and to rather use gas produced by the 71 mcm/d (26 bcm/year) Fadhili gas plant that will process gas from onshore and offshore fields. In addition, the reduction in transportation caused by the measures in place to limit the Covid-19 epidemic has reduced the domestic demand for petroleum products.

FAR fails to raise debt for Sangomar oil project in Senegal

The Africa-focused Australian oil and gas company FAR has failed to raise debt for its Sangomar oil project in Senegal, due to adverse markets conditions cause by the Covid-19 pandemic and the fall in crude oil prices. Consequently, the company will continue to explore and evaluate all options to pursue the project. In addition, FAR settled a dispute with Woodside Petroleum over its acquisition of a stake in the project. Woodside Petroleum, which operates the project, does not anticipate delays in Sangomar Development and Exploitation Plan.

China Gezhouba will build a 1 GW hydropower project in Turkey

The Turkish company KAF Teknik Yapı has awarded a US$1.5bn (€1.4bn) contract to China Nengge Gezhouba International to build a 1,000 MW hydropower project in the Isparta region in western Turkey. The pumped-storage project will include four 250 MW units. The scope of the contract includes design, supply, construction, installation, commissioning and trial operation. Construction is expected to last 75 months (commissioning as of mid-2026).

SECI and NTPC plan 10 GW of renewable power plants in Rajasthan (India)

Indian state-owned power companies Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) and NTPC have reached an agreement with the government of Rajasthan (India) to develop two 5 GW renewable energy parks in the state. The two 5 GW parks would be the first phases of a much bigger project, the 25 GW Ultra Mega RE Park, which is proposed in Jaisalmer, and could combine solar PV plants with battery storage. In addition, the Indian government intends to develop another 25 GW renewable park in Khavada (Gujarat).

Georgia Power reaches new milestone at Vogtle nuclear project (US)

Georgia Power (part of the Southern Company group) has completed the placement of the containment vessel top head at its Vogtle Unit 4 reactor project in Waynesboro, Georgia (United States). The group had lifted the Unit 3 containment vessel top approximately a year ago. With this milestone, the Vogtle nuclear expansion project is now 84% complete.

Triconti Windkraft may build up to 1.2 GW offshore wind (Philippines)

The Department of Energy of the Philippines has awarded Triconti Windkraft Group the rights to develop offshore wind projects in the Aparri Bay in the north of the country and in the Guimaras Strait in the centre of the Philippines. These areas offer a potential offshore wind capacity of up to 1,200 MW.

South Africa eases rules for small-scale power generation

South Africa has issued a new regulation exempting generators with a capacity of less than 1 MW from the need to obtain a license from the regulator. Many energy-intensive industrial groups such as mining companies were requesting deregulation of approval procedures to develop their own power capacities, to ensure reliable power supply in a context of rolling load-shedding episodes. They were calling for scrapping licenses for power plants up to 10 MW.

Japan maintains 2030 climate goals unchanged in new NDC

Japan has submitted an update to its National Determined Contribution (NDC) to the Secretariat of the United Nations Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), in which the country maintains its target of reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 26% by 2030 compared to 2013. The Japanese government intends to engage in further efforts both in the future to cut GHG emissions beyond this level, though without setting a more ambitious target.
