Croatia plans to tender 2.3 GW of renewables capacity

Croatia has introduced a new law to tender 2,265 MW of renewable capacity. The Croatian authorities have allocated 1,075W of solar capacity, including 210 MW for solar projects ranging in size from 50 kW to 500 kW, 240 MW for solar installations with capacities between 500 kW and 10 MW, and 625 MW for PV power plants exceeding 10 MW.

Germany’s latest joint auction fails to attract bid for onshore wind

The Germany energy regulator (Bundesnetzagentur) has published the results of the latest tender for 200 MW of onshore wind and solar capacity, with a bidding date set for 1 April 2020. The auction was oversubscribed as 113 solar offers with a total capacity of 552 MW were submitted, while 30 bids totalling 204 MW were awarded. The value of the submitted bids ranged between €49.7/MWh and €56.1/MWh, with an average bidding price of €53.3/MWh (€51.8/MWh in the technology-specific solar auction in March 2020). The regulator received no bid for onshore wind.

Algeria aims to develop 4 GW of solar capacity by 2024

The Algerian government plans to develop several solar power plants with a total capacity of 4 GW over the 2020-2024 period, at a cost of US$3.2bn to US$3.6bn. Thanks to the so-called TAFOUK1 project, Algeria expects to meet growing domestic for electricity and to export electricity.

Denmark plans to develop two offshore wind hubs totalling 4 GW by 2030

The Danish government has unveiled plans to build two offshore wind energy islands in the Baltic and North Seas with a total capacity of 4 GW by 2030. Denmark intends to build one of the two 2 GW hubs on the Danish Baltic island of Bornholm. It could be expanded to a capacity of 10 GW at a later stage. The second hub will be located on an artificial island in the North Sea. In December 2019, the country allocated DKK 65m (€8.7m) for studies on the development of 10 GW of offshore wind capacity in the Kattegat, Baltic and North Seas.

Germany reaches deal on wind turbines distance and solar cap

Germany’s coalition government has reached an agreement over standard distance for wind turbines and the abolition of the solar cap. The final decisions on rules governing the minimum distance between homes and wind turbines will be taken at the state government level. In addition, federal authorities lifted the existing cap of 52 GW on the country’s cumulative solar capacity.

Engie signs a US$493m deal with BNDES to fund a 361.2 MW wind farm (Brazil)

Engie has signed a BRL2.7bn (US$490m) deal with the Brazilian Development Bank (BNDES) to finance the 361.2 MW Campo Largo wind project (phase 2) in the state of Bahia (north-eastern Brazil) and the Gralha Azul power transmission project, which includes the construction of 1,000 km of transmission lines, 5 new substations and the expansion of an additional 5 substations in the state of Paraná.

Malaysia’s Petronas will reduce its 2020 capital expenditures by 21%

Malaysian state-run oil and gas company Petronas plans to reduce its capital expenditures by 21% and its operating costs by 12% in 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, collapsing energy demand and falling oil prices. The company originally planned to spend MYR50bn (US$11.5bn) in 2020. Most of the capital expenditures cuts will be made outside of Malaysia, but some domestic projects are likely to be delayed due to the impact of the pandemic. Petronas invested only MYR8.5bn (US$1.95bn) during the first quarter of 2020.

Oman will complete 1 GW Miraah CSP power project

Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) has decided to go ahead with the development of the 1 GW Miraah solar thermal (CSP) power project in southern Oman, despite the liquidation of its technology partner GlassPoint Solar. GlassPoint Solar was building and operating the project. The Miraah CSP project will include 36 glasshouses commissioned in modules of four and will have a capacity of 1,021 MW. Steam will be used for enhanced oil recovery (EOR) at the nearby Amal oilfield, operated by Shell. Construction started in October 2015, and 4 units of the plant were commissioned in February 2018.

Russia’s Gazprom starts work on Power of Siberia 2 gas pipeline to China

Gazprom has started a feasibility study for its new gas pipeline project in Eastern Siberia, the 50 bcm/year Power of Siberia 2 gas pipeline project, which will connect Russia to western China via Mongolia.
