China targets a 10.8% stake of renewables in the power mix in 2020
4 Jun 2020China plans to increase the share of renewables (including hydro) in the power mix to 28.2% in 2020. The share of renewables (excluding hydro) is expected to reach 10.8%. Ten provinces and regions must produce at least 30% of power from renewable sources, while 9 provinces and regions target more than 15% of power generation from non-hydro sources. Regional power grid operators have been requested to allocate power capacity according to the targets.

4 Jun 2020The Italian energy agency Gestore dei Servizi Energetici (GSE) has published the results of its latest 500 MW renewable auction, in which its selected 18 wind projects with a cumulated capacity of 406 MW and 4 solar projects with a combined capacity of 19 MW. The auction was open to projects with capacity higher than 1 MW and located in urban or industrial areas.

3 Jun 2020The government of the Dominican Republic plans to relaunch a 400 MW renewable tender before the end of 2020. The auction was originally planned in early 2020. The selected project will be awarded a 20-year contract in US dollars.
In 2019, the country pledged to achieve to achieve 70% of renewables in total energy use by 2030. As of May 2020, renewables accounted for 19% (893 MW) of total capacity (4.7 GW), with 629 MW of hydro and 166 MW of solar.

3 Jun 2020The Israeli government has presented an ILS80bn (US$23bn) plan to increase the share of solar in the power generation to 30% by 2030, when solar power should cover more than 80% of the country’s electricity needs at peak hours. Most of the funding will go to solar plants, which will be built by private operators. In addition, the government will finance the upgrade of the national grid and investments in energy storage. Israel aims at reaching 16 GW of solar capacity by 2030. In parallel, coal-fired generation will be completely phased out.

China’s CTG will build a 1.1 GW hydro plant in Azad Kashmir (Pakistan)
4 Jun 2020The government of Pakistan, through the Private Power and Infrastructure Board, the authorities of Azad Jammu and Kashmir and state-owned China’s Three Gorges Corporation (CTG) have signed an agreement to build the 1,124 MW Kohala hydropower project on the Jhelum River under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) framework. The project will require a US$2.4bn investment and is expected to generate 5 TWh/year of electricity.

4 Jun 2020The Secretary of State for Business, Environment and Industrial Strategy of the United Kingdom has approved the 350 MW Cleve Hill Solar power project in Kent. A joint venture between the British firm Hive Energy and the German solar company Wirsol Energy will build the £450m (€504m) plant entirely on a subsidy-free basis. Construction is scheduled to start in early 2021, with first power expected for 2023.

4 Jun 2020EDF Renewables, Enbridge and Wpd have launched the construction of the 500 MW Fecamp offshore wind project in northern France, which is estimated to cost €2bn. The plant will comprise 71 wind turbines, which will be supplied by Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy (SGRE). Project commissioning is scheduled in 2023. The offshore wind project signed a 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA) in June 2018.

4 Jun 2020The Indian company Sterling and Wilson Solar has completed the construction of a 125 MW solar power plant in Oman. The plant is owned and operated by Amin Renewable Energy, a Japanese-Omani consortium of Marubeni, Oman Gas, Bahwan Renewable Energy and Nebras Power. As of May 2020, Oman had only 8 MW of solar, for a total capacity of 10.6 GW.

4 Jun 2020The World Bank has approved a US$350m loan from the International Development Association (IDA) to the government of Myanmar as part of the power system efficiency and resilience project, with the objective to increase the output and efficiency of power generation. The authorities intend to replace the old gas and steam turbines in the Ywama power plant (292 MW) with a 250-300 MW CCGT and to upgrade the transmission system.
