The EIB may lend US$300m for an energy efficiency project in Ukraine
10 Jun 2020The European Investment Bank (EIB) and the government of Ukraine have signed an agreement to prepare the country’s Public Buildings Energy Efficiency project, which is expected to be financed by a €300m EIB loan. The project will increase energy efficiency in 1,000 buildings (mainly kindergartens, hospitals and schools), save more than 1 Mt of CO2 and benefit 2.5 million people.

9 Jun 2020The Hungarian parliament has adopted a law to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, supporting the EU net-zero emissions strategy. In the medium term, the country remains committed to a binding greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction target of at least 40% by 2030 compared to 1990, like other EU countries.

9 Jun 2020The Directorate-General of Energy and Geology (DGEG) of Portugal has launched a 700 MW auction for large scale solar projects. The bid submission period will end on 31 July 2020. The auction was initially expected in January 2020 but was postponed to March 2020 and then suspended due to the pandemic.

TEPCO (Japan) plans to add 6-7 GW of renewable capacity by 2035
10 Jun 2020TEPCO Renewable Power, the renewable unit of the Japanese power utility Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO), intends to invest JPY1,000-2,000bn (US$9.3-18.6bn) to develop 6 to 7 GW of offshore wind and hydropower capacity by 2035. The company would focus its offshore wind investments on Southeast Asia and North America and its hydropower investments on Southeast Asia. TEPCO Renewable Power operates 9.9 GW of renewable projects, and the new investments would increase its renewable capacity in the group’s total capacity from 20% to 25%.

Global solar thermal capacities reached 479 GWth in 2019
10 Jun 2020According to Solar Heat Worldwide, the cumulated solar thermal capacity operational at the end of 2019 reached 479 GWth, corresponding to an annual solar thermal energy yield of 389 TWh. This represents savings of 135.1 Mt of CO2. In 2019, new installations in the global solar thermal market declined by 6% (+606 MWth), due to fewer collector additions in China.

10 Jun 2020According to Statistics Norway, Norwegian greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions fell by 2.1% to 51 MtCO2eq in 2019, the fourth year of decline in a row, thanks to reduced fuel consumption in the transport sector (-7.7%) and a drop in emission from oil and gas extraction (-1.7% to 13.9 MtCO2eq). However, emissions in the industry and mining sector grew by 1.9% to 12.2 MtCO2eq. Overall, Norway’s GHG emissions in 2019 stood 1% below their 1990 levels.

Georgia regulator (US) anticipates new delays for Vogtle nuclear expansion
10 Jun 2020According to the Public Service Commission of Georgia (United States), the units 3 and 4 of the Vogtle nuclear expansion project are unlikely to be commissioned in November 2021 and November 2022. In addition, the cost of the two units will likely exceed its current U$17.1bn target. In April 2020, Georgia Power (part of the Southern Company group) completed the placement of the containment vessel top head at its Vogtle Unit 4 reactor project in Waynesboro, Georgia (United States). The group had lifted the Unit 3 containment vessel top in early 2019.

10 Jun 2020Adani Green Energy Limited (AGEL) has won the first manufacturing linked agreement from the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI), under which the company will develop 8 GW solar capacity and will commit to establish 2 GW of additional solar cell and module manufacturing capacity, requiring a total investment of INR450bn (US$6bn). With this agreement, AGEL will have 15 GW of projects under operation, construction or contract. AGEL plan to invest INR1,120bn (US$15bn) over the 2020-2025 period to achieve an installed capacity of 25 GW by 2025.

10 Jun 2020The government of Bangladesh has approved the creation of a 50-50 joint venture named Bangladesh-China Power Company Limited (Renewable) between the state-owned electric utility North-West Power Generation Company Limited (NWPGCL) and the China National Machinery Import and Export Corporation (CMC), a subsidiary of Chinese state-owned conglomerate China General Technology Group. The Chinese group will invest around US$500m in the joint venture, which intends to develop 450 MW of solar capacity and a 50 MW wind project on land provided by NWPGCL.
