Can you guess this country?

September marks this country’s Overshoot Day—the date on which Earth Overshoot Day would fall if all of humanity consumed like the people in this country. To get this value, we compare the country’s Ecological Footprint to global biocapacity. See our Country Overshoot Days page for more details!

This country has many different ecosystems and protects its plants and animals with special reserve areas. The second highest mountain range in the world runs through this country and more than half of this country’s residents live in its coastal desert.

Now can you guess this country?

Making the Sustainable Development Goals consistent with sustainability

In a recently published journal article, Global Footprint Network concludes the UN Sustainable Development Goals are vastly underperforming on sustainability. In fact, when we analyzed country performance in a recent SDG index, we found that the Ecological Footprint of the top 20 highest ranked countries in the index is so large that if all countries consumed at the same rate, we would need three Earths to support humanity’s demand on nature.

El Poder Ecológico: Our Colombian partnership to advance sustainability

This July, Global Footprint Network was fortunate to host government representatives from Nariño, Colombia, for a two-week work session at our Oakland office in support of transforming this province into a green economy. After decades of civil war, peace agreements between the Colombian government and the FARC have opened up new economic possibilities, and Nariño is eager to build their future on their strength: their ecological advantage.

We’ve gone platinum

We are pleased to announce that Global Footprint Network has received the 2017 Platinum Seal of Transparency from GuideStar, a public charity that collects, organizes, and presents information on U.S. nonprofits. This comprehensive information is used by foundations and individual donors to guide their philanthropic decisions. The platinum rating is the highest level that GuideStar awards and indicates that we are focused on making progress toward achieving our mission and are intentional about measuring impact. Attention educators: calculator troubleshooting

Is your school firewall blocking our new Footprint Calculator? Are you missing our country-specific versions of the calculator? Since the launch of our updated, mobile-friendly calculator this summer, we’ve received lots of feedback from educators—good and bad—which we are looking at closely as we continue to improve the calculator and related tools. If you are a teacher who uses our Footprint Calculator, please read our blog post to help with troubleshooting and learn more about our future plans for what one educator called this «one-of-a-kind transformational tool.»
