Enbridge acquires rest of Spectra Energy for US$3.3bn (Canada-US)

Canada’s largest pipeline operator Enbridge has eventually agreed to acquire the remaining shares in the US-based pipeline and storage facilities operator Spectra Energy Partners for a total consideration of US$3.3bn. Enbridge previously owned 83% of Spectra and offered 1.11 of its shares for each share of Spectra it does not already own, which is 9.8% more than its initial offer. With this acquisition, the company hopes to simplify and streamline its corporate structures and gain tax benefits after 2020.

Enbridge is North America’s largest energy infrastructure company since the acquisition of Spectra Energy, including Spectra’s 33,800 km of oil and gas pipelines, 8.5 bcm of gas storage and 4.8 mbl of oil storage, and of a 50% ownership in DCP Midstream, largest producer of natural gas liquids in the US.
