Rhode Island (US) clears 800 MW Vineyard Wind offshore project
The Rhode Island Coastal Resources Management Council has approved the 800 MW Vineyard Wind offshore wind project, which will be located 15 miles (24 km) to the south of Martha’s Vineyard and approximately 34 miles (55 km) to the Cape Cod mainland in the United States. The US$2bn project was endorsed in spite of local opposition from commercial fishermen, who estimate that their livelihood would be threatened..

This decision represents a milestone for the project but it still requires approval from the Massachusetts regulator to be able to move forward. The wind park is set to break ground later in 2019. The first 400 MW are expected to be operational by the end of 2021 and the remainder by 2022. It will be developed by Iberdrola’s subsidiary Avangrid Renewables (50%) and the investment fund Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (50%).
