The ‘Energiewende’ and the ‘transition énergétique’ by 2030

Energiewende publication The Energiewende policy in Germany and the Transition énergétique policy in France face the same challenge for 2030: Integrating renewable energy while reducing the conventional power production fleet. To reach climate and renewable energy targets, Germany will have to cut its coal-fired power generation in half, while France will have to cut the share of nuclear in its power mix to 50%, which will have cross-border impacts. France and Germany should rapidly define their national strategies regarding their nuclear and coal fleets, consult each other closely on cross-border consequences, and initiate joint actions for the implementation of the energy transition at bilateral, regional and European levels.

Unlocking the inclusive growth story of the 21st century

Inclusive growth publication Transitioning to the low-carbon, sustainable growth path could deliver a direct economic gain of US$26 trillion through 2030 compared with business-as-usual and could generate over 65 million new low-carbon jobs by 2030. Subsidy reform and carbon pricing alone could generate an estimated US$2.8 trillion in government revenues per year by 2030. In addition, the cost of hedging—taking action, but doing so too slowly and giving mixed signals to the market—is rising: estimates suggest that mixed signals could lead to US$12 trillion of stranded fossil fuel assets by 2035.
