TOP STORY: Kenya commissions 310 MW Turkana wind project The 310 MW Lake Turkana Wind Power (LTWP) project, the largest wind park in Africa, has been commissioned in Loiyangalani District, in the Marsabit County of Kenya. The wind park includes 365 wind turbines rated 850 kW each and was developed by the LTWP consortium which includes Aldwych International and KP&P Africa as co-developers. The Investment Fund for Developing Countries, Vestas, the Finnish Fund for Industrial Cooperation, KLP Norfund Investments and Sandpiper took part to the project development and construction. The wind project was connected to the national power transmission grid in September 2019 after a 15-month delay, due to setbacks in the construction of the related 400 kV transmission line from the power plant to the Suswa substation. The Lake Turkana wind project is part of Kenya’s Vision 2030 flagship project. Kenya is considering to install up to 600 MW of new onshore wind capacity by 2025, adding 50 MW to 100 MW per year of new wind capacity over a 6-year period. |
