Bangladesh’s first LNG import terminal commissioned in Moheshkhali Bangladesh’s first floating LNG import terminal in Moheshkhali (Cox’s Bazar, bay of Bengal, southeast Bangladesh) has started operations following delays caused by technical problems. The floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) arrived on site in April 2018 to offload a maiden LNG cargo from Qatar. It was initially slated for startup in May 2018 but has been delayed until now because bad weather hampered the FSRU’s efforts to dock properly, connect to the domestic infrastructure and offload its cargo. The Moheshkhali Floating LNG project was built by Excelerate Energy Bangladesh, a subsidiary of US-based Excelerate Energy. It has a capacity of 5.1 bcm/year and a storage capacity of 138 000 m3. It will be operated by Excelerate Energy over a 15-year period on a BOT basis and the ownership will be transferred to Petrobangla afterwards. Bangladesh has signed an MoU with Qatar to import 5.4 bcm/year of LNG worth US$1.56bn/year. |
