RWE freezes plans for 2.8 GW of new gas-fired capacity in Tilbury (UK)

German energy group RWE has frozen development plans for its Tilbury energy centre project in the United Kingdom, which included plans for a 2,500 MW CCGT power plant, for an up to 300 MW open-cycle gas turbine (OCGT) power plant and for a 100 MW energy storage facility at Tilbury, near London. The project was stopped due to high project costs and to the current adverse market conditions, which includes high wholesale gas and carbon permit prices.

Even though developing a gas-fired project would be difficult and uneconomic, RWE will keep exploring options developing the Tilbury site, which remains a good location for future energy projects. The Tilbury energy centre was meant to replace the Tilbury B coal-fired power plant that is still being demolished in stages.
