Post-Doctorate Position for Synergies between Ecosystem Services and Agroecology

The Redesigning Agroecosystems team at the Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC) in partnership with the Gund Institute for Ecological Economics (GIEE) and the department of Community Development and Applied Economics at the University of Vermont (UVM) seeks a post-doctorate to participate in our project on Synergies between Ecosystem Services and Agroecology in the Atlantic Forest of Santa Catarina. We require a creative individual to assist in constructing spatial models of ecosystem services under different land use scenarios, utilizing InVEST (Integrated Valuation of Ecosystem Services and Tradeoffs) or other suitable modeling software. The models will be used to better understand and quantify the impact of our work designing and disseminating sustainable agroecosystems. The attached project summary provides a general overview of the project.

The Redesigning Agroecosystems team is an interdisciplinary group of researchers and students dedicated to designing and disseminating agroecosystems capable of sustaining food supplies, improving farmer livelihoods and restoring ecological function to Brazil’s Atlantic Forest. Agriculture is a leading cause of unsustainable degradation of global ecosystems, and is overly dependent on non-renewable resources. Both food and well-functioning ecosystems are essential to human survival. Sustainable food production will require new agricultural technologies that restore ecological function without sacrificing food production, together with the political and economic institutions required for their rapid and widespread dissemination. We seek a candidate who shares this vision and is interested in advancing research capable of addressing this societal challenge. The position is currently funded through February, 2017.
