India aims to double its oil refining capacity by 2025

India intends to nearly double its oil refining capacity in the next five years, from the current 260 Mt/year to 450-500 Mt/year. The refining capacity of the country amounted to 5.2 mb/d (260 Mt/year) in early 2020 across 21 refineries, including 15 with a capacity over 100 000 bbl/d (5 Mt/year). In total, there are currently 14 projects planned with an expected additional capacity of around 2.9 mb/d (145 Mt/year).

The previous objective was to reach this level by 2030 for a total investment of around US$300bn over the next 10 years.

Canada unveils a new climate plan, targeting net-zero emissions by 2050

The Canadian government has unveiled a new plan to reach net-zero emissions by 2050. The new regulation would force the federal government to create interim emissions reduction targets every five years until 2050. In addition, the bill will create an outside advisory board that would provide advice to the government on settings targets and the best sectoral strategies for achieving net-zero. The text is yet to be approved by the parliament.

Israel launches a tender for a large solar+storage power project

The Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Energy, the Israel Land Authority and the Electricity Authority of Israel have released a tender for a large solar PV power project near Dimona in the Negev desert. The project will include an energy storage component. Construction is expected to start in late 2021 and to be completed in 2023.

In October 2020, the Israeli government approved a plan to increase the share of renewable energy sources in power generation to 30% by 2030, with the remaining 70% covered by gas, tapping large domestic resources in the Mediterranean Sea.

ADNOC (UAE) will invest US$122bn over 2021-2025 to boost oil production

The Supreme Petroleum Council (SPC) of Abu Dhabi (United Arab Emirates) has approved ADNOC’s capital expenditure (CAPEX) plan of AED448bn (US$122bn) for 2021-2025. The company intends to increase its oil production capacity by 20% from the current 4 mbl/d to 5 mb/d in 2030. This growth will be supported by ADNOC’s recent discoveries, including 22 Gbl of recoverable unconventional oil resources and 2 Gbl of conventional oil reserves. These discoveries raise the UAE’s conventional oil reserves base to 107 Gbl of recoverable oil.

NextEra Energy’s Point Beach nuclear plant (US) seeks new 20-year license

The US energy group NextEra Energy is seeking approval from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to extend by two decades the licenses for its Point Beach nuclear power plant in Two Rivers, Wisconsin (United States). The licences for the two 643 MW pressurized water reactors (PWRs) that were commissioned in 1970 and 1972, were extended in 2005 and are due to expire in 2030 and 2033.

Algeria’s gas exports are expected to decrease by nearly 5% in 2020

According to the Ministry of Energy of Algeria, the country’s total gas production is forecast to decline by 1% and gas exports are expected to decrease by 4.7% in 2020 to 41 bcm, down from nearly 43 bcm in 2019, due to a lower gas demand in Europe and the competition from cheaper US LNG supplies. In the long run, Algeria’s natural gas exports should decrease by more than 40% to 2025 (26 bcm) due to stagnant production, rising domestic demand and insufficient investment.

GGE plans 1.5 GW of wind projects in the United Kingdom and Sweden

Galileo Green Energy (GGE), an Italian affiliate of the New Zealand asset manager Morrison & Co, has reached an agreement with an unspecified development partner to develop 1.5 GW of wind projects in the United Kingdom (UK) and Sweden. The two partners intend to build 500 MW of project in the UK and 1,000 MW in Sweden.

SDNPC commissions district heating project at Haiyang NPP (China)

State Power Investment Corporation (SPIC)’s subsidiary Shandong Nuclear Power (SDNPC), which owns the 2,340 MW Haiyang nuclear power plant in Shandong (China), has commissioned a district heating system, supplied with steam from the reactors. This is the first commercial nuclear heating project in China. The heated water is flowed through municipal heating pipes to consumers by local thermal company Fengyuan Thermal Power.

Coal India targets 5 GW of solar capacity by 2024

The Indian state-owned coal mining company Coal India Ltd (CIL) plans to invest INR56.5bn (US$760m) by March 2024 to build 14 rooftop and ground-mounted solar power projects with a total capacity of 3,000 MW to power its mining operations. The coal mining company would finance nearly 2/3 of this investment and has created a joint venture with the power generation company NTPC to finance the rest of the solar project. In addition, CIL has signed a deal with Solar Energy Corporation of India for solar projects of 1,000 MW each.
