Greece approves 2.8 GW of renewable energy projects

The Greek Ministerial Committee for Strategic Investments has approved four renewable energy projects with a combined capacity of 2.8 GW and requiring an investment of over €2bn. Egnatia Group will invest €888m to develop 1.5 GW of solar PV plants across 12 regional units in Central and Northern Greece. Karatzis plans to build 37 solar PV plants totalling 830 MW in Larissa, Magnesia and Kilkis for an investment of €422m. Terna Energy will develop 18 wind plants at Karystos on the island of Evia with a total capacity of 360 MW and a budget of €585m.

India’s SECI awards 1.2 GW of solar-wind hybrid power projects

The Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) has closed its tender for setting up 1.2 GW of solar-wind hybrid power projects in India under tranche-III of the interstate transmission-connected (ISTS) programme.

Three companies, namely Adani Renewables, ABC Renewables (an affiliate of Axis Energy), and Amp Energy – won 600 MW, 380 MW, and 130 MW of projects, respectively, at a tariff of INR2.41/kWh (US$3.27c/kWh). In addition, ACME Solar submitted a bid of INR2.42/kWh ((US$3.28c/kWh) for 300 MW of projects but was only awarded 90 MW under the bucket-filling method.

Germany’s latest onshore wind and solar PV tender was oversubscribed

The German Federal Network Agency (Bundesnetzagentur) has published the results of the latest tenders for onshore wind and solar capacity, with a bidding date set for 1 December 2020. The auction for 367 MW of onshore wind capacity was oversubscribed, attracting 96 bids totalling 657 MW. 58 bids totalling 400 MW were selected with price ranging from €5.59c/kWh to €6.07c/kWh (weighted average of €5.91c/kWh). Three bids were excluded.

Norway’s supreme court confirms governments plans for Arctic oil exploration

The Supreme Court of Norway has upheld governments plans for Arctic oil exploration. The court ruled that ten exploration licenses in the Arctic awarded in 2016 did not violate Norway’s constitution and the European Convention on Human Rights. In November 2020, The Norwegian Ministry of Petroleum and Energy launched its 25th oil exploration licencing round, which comprises 9 areas, including 8 in the Arctic Barents Sea and 1 in the Norwegian Sea. The government will tender 136 new oil exploration blocks, with 125 in the Arctic Barents Sea.

Red Rock Power acquires a 50% stake in the Överturingen wind plant (Sweden)

Red Rock Power, an affiliate of the Chinese state-owned group SDIC, has acquired a 50% stake in the 241 MW Överturingen onshore wind plant in central Sweden. The 56-turbine wind project reached commercial operation earlier in December 2020.

Petrobras will sell its stake in the Brazil-Bolivia natural gas pipeline

The Brazilian state-owned oil and gas group Petrobras has launched the sales process of its entire 51% stake in Transportadora Brasileira Gasoduto Bolivia-Brasil (TBG) and 25% in Transportadora Sulbrasileira de Gás. (TSB). TBG owns and operates the Bolivia-Brazil gas pipeline in the Brazilian territory, which stretches over 2,593 km and has a transportation capacity of up to 30 mcm/d along the pipeline and an additional 5.2 mcm/d on the São Paulo section.

Spain’s Ibereólica plans a new 794 MW onshore wind plant in Chile

The Spanish energy group Grupo Ibereólica Renovables is seeking environmental approval for a 794 MW onshore wind project in the Antofagasta Region of Chile. The project, which will comprise 128 turbines rated 6.2 MW each, will require an investment of US$684m.

Turkey fully commissions the 1.2 GW Ilisu hydropower plant

The 1,200 MW Ilisu hydropower plant on the Tigris river in south-eastern Turkey has reached full capacity. The TRY18bn (US$2.4bn) project was approved by the Turkish authorities in 1997, an suffered several setbacks and delays.

Hydropower accounts for 31% of Turkey’s installed capacity, with 28.5 GW, and covered 29% of the power mix in 2019.

Jiasheng Gas will build a 1.5 Mt/year LNG import terminal (China)

Jiasheng Gas, a Chinese independent gas distributor, has signed an engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract with China Wuhuan Engineering to build a 1.5 Mt/year LNG regasification terminal at the Jiangyin port in Jiangsu province (east-central China).

Lekela instals first turbine at 250 MW West Bakr wind project (Egypt)

The African renewable project developer Leleka has installed the first turbine at its 250 MW West Bakr wind project in Egypt. The project, which entered construction in February 2020, comprises 96 turbines supplied by Siemens Gamesa. Commissioning is scheduled by the end of 2021. Located 30 km north-west of Ras Ghareb, West Bakr Wind is part of Egypt’s build, own, operate (BOO) scheme.
