Argentina unveils its 2nd nationally determined contribution

The government of Argentina has updated its nationally determined contribution (NDC). The country has pledged not to exceed net greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of 359 MtCO2eq by 2030, which represents a total decrease in emissions of 19% by 2030, compared to the historical peak reached in 2007, and a reduction of 25.7% compared to the previous NDC submitted in 2016.

Morocco launches a call for projects to add 400 MW of solar PV capacity

The Moroccan Ministry of Energy, Mines and the Environment, together with the Moroccan Agency for Sustainable Energy (Masen), has released a call for projects relating to the multi-site solar program Noor PV II – phase 1. The tender constitutes the second and last step of the selection process of private operators for the solar PV power project, with a total power capacity of approximately 400 MW. The PV projects may be located near Sidi Bennour, Kelaa Sraghna, Taroudant, Bejaad, El Hajeb andt Ain Beni Mathar.

UK-EU Brexit trade deal allows unchanged access to EU energy market

The UK government has concluded a post-Brexit trade deal with the European Union. The energy part of the new agreement allows the country virtually unchanged access to the EU electricity and gas market, through new trading arrangements over interconnectors. However, that energy deal is due to expire on 30 June 2026 and there will be annual negotiations after this date. In 2019, the United Kingdom was a net importer of electricity.

Algeria’s Sonatrach will invest US$40bn to boost oil and gas production

The Algerian national hydrocarbon company Sonatrach intends to implement an investment plan of US$40bn over the next five years, including 51% in Algerian dinars (DZD), with the objective to ramp up production. Production and sales are expected to grow in 2021, thanks in particular to the start-up of production at the peripheral deposits of Gassi Touil and Hassi Bir Rekaiz, as well as the ramp-up of production at Tinrhert and the completion of the Hassi R’Mel Boosting for the Northern zone.

Orsted sells 50% stake in 605 MW offshore wind project in Taiwan

The Danish energy group Ørsted has signed agreements to sell a 50% stake in the 605 MW Changhua 1 offshore wind project offshore Taiwan to a consortium of Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec (CDPQ) and Taiwanese private equity fund Cathay PE; CDPQ will be the majority owner among the partners. The transaction is pending regulatory approval from the Taiwanese authorities.

Bolivia will lower natural gas export to Argentina by 30% in 2021

Argentina and Bolivia have signed a fifth addendum to their gas sales agreement in force in since 2004. Argentina will receive up to 14 mcm/d during the winter months in 2021, which is 30% less than the volume delivered in 2020 (20 mcm/d on average). Bolivia will export 11 mcm/d to Argentina in the first four months of 2021, up to 14 mcm/d in the May-August period, 13 mcm/d in September and down to 10 mcm/d in the last quarter of 2021. Due to the decrease in Bolivian gas exports, Argentina will have to import higher volume of LNG.

Azerbaijan starts gas exports to Europe through the TAP pipeline

Azerbaijan has started commercial gas supplies to Europe via the Trans-Adriatic Pipeline (TAP), which entered operations in November 2020. The Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) can transport 10 bcm/year of natural gas from the Shah Deniz II field in the Azerbaijani sector of the Caspian Sea to Europe. The 878 km long pipeline connects with the Trans Anatolian Pipeline (TANAP) at the Turkish-Greek border in Kipoi, crosses Greece and Albania and the Adriatic Sea, before coming ashore in Southern Italy.

TurkStream gas pipeline delivers first gas to Serbia and Bosnia

Russia’s Gazprom has started to export natural gas to Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina through the TurkStream gas pipeline. In January 2020, Russia and Turkey officially commissioned the 31.5 bcm/year TurkStream gas pipeline stretching 930 km across the Black Sea and that will supply 15.75 bcm/year to Turkey and 15.75 bcm/year to Bulgaria, Serbia and Hungary. Russian gas is now brought via Bulgaria’s national gas transmission system to Serbia, where it is distributed among consumers in Serbia and in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Ørsted’s 2.4 GW offshore wind project in the UK gets planning consent

The UK Planning Inspectorate has granted planning consent to Ørsted’s 2,400 MW Hornsea Project Three offshore wind project in the North Sea. The Danish energy group can install a maximum of 231 turbines featuring rotors up to 265 metres in diameter and tip heights of 325 metres off the coast of Yorkshire. Ørsted submitted its final plans for the project for approval in May 2018.

ACWA Power signs deals to build a 240 MW wind project in Azerbaijan

Saudi Arabia’s ACWA Power has signed the power purchase, investment and transmission connection agreements for a 240 MW wind power project in the Absheron and Khizi regions of Azerbaijan. A first implementation agreement worth US$300m was signed in January 2020. The national electrical power company Azerenerji will be the off-taker for the project’s power generation.
