Ethiopia’s updated NDC targets 12% GHG emissions cut by 2030

Ethiopia has updated its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The country is committing to reduce economy-wide greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 12.4% in 2030 compared to a business-as-usual (BAU) scenario, using its domestic resources. This would represent a 51.1 MtCO2eq reduction, limiting GHG emissions at 360.85 MtCO2eq in 2030 (compared to a BAU emission level of 412 MtCO2eq).

Greece will launch a 350 MW solar-wind tender in May 2021

Greece’s Regulatory Authority for Energy (RAE) will launch a third combined tender for up to 350 MW of solar and wind power on 24 May 2021; applications for participation will be accepted by 22 March 2021. The Greek authorities intend to allocate solar power projects with a generation capacity of up to 20 MW, along with wind power plants up to 50 MW. The auction will have a €53.86/MWh price ceiling for the energy generated.

Argentina unveils its 2nd nationally determined contribution

The government of Argentina has updated its nationally determined contribution (NDC). The country has pledged not to exceed net greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of 359 MtCO2eq by 2030, which represents a total decrease in emissions of 19% by 2030, compared to the historical peak reached in 2007, and a reduction of 25.7% compared to the previous NDC submitted in 2016.

Morocco launches a call for projects to add 400 MW of solar PV capacity

The Moroccan Ministry of Energy, Mines and the Environment, together with the Moroccan Agency for Sustainable Energy (Masen), has released a call for projects relating to the multi-site solar program Noor PV II – phase 1. The tender constitutes the second and last step of the selection process of private operators for the solar PV power project, with a total power capacity of approximately 400 MW. The PV projects may be located near Sidi Bennour, Kelaa Sraghna, Taroudant, Bejaad, El Hajeb andt Ain Beni Mathar.

EDF’s nuclear output in France declined by 12% in 2020

EDF’s nuclear output declined by 12% to just over 335 TWh in 2020. In 2019, nuclear power generation in France dipped by 3.5% to 379.5 TWh, missing its 384-388 TWh target. In January 2020, the group announced a target of up to 395 TWh for the year but it soon revised it to 375 TWh in a context of pandemic-related crisis. In April 2020, EDF cut again its 2020 nuclear output estimate in France by 20% to 300 TWh, before forecasting a higher nuclear production in July 2020 (around 315-325 TWh, i.e. +5 to 8%) and in October 2020 (325-335 TWh).

Cambodia start producing oil from a field in the gulf of Thailand

Cambodia has started producing crude oil from the offshore Cambodia Block A concession in the gulf of Thailand. The block, which is expected to reach a peak production of 7,500 bbl/d from 5 development wells, is operated by the Singaporean oil and gas company KrisEnergy, which holds a 95% interest. The remaining 5% interest is held by the government of Cambodia through the General Department of State Property and Non-Tax Revenue (GDSPNTR) of the Ministry of Economy and Finance.

European solar thermal capacities grew by 2.5% to 37 GWth in 2019

According to Solar Heat Europe, the total installed solar thermal capacity in Europe grew by 2.5% to 37 GWth in 2019. Newly installed capacity increased by 3.4% and reached almost 1.6 GWth, which is higher than the growth registered in 2018 (2.4%). The highest increase in cumulative capacity was observed in Bulgaria (+15%), Denmark and Poland (over 10% growth). At the end of 2019, the country with the largest capacity in operations was Germany (nearly 13.6 GWth), followed by Greece (3.4 GWth) and Italy (3.4 GWth).

Two 300 MW solar projects in Extremadura (Spain) start generating power

Encavis has started to generate power from the 300 MW Talayuela solar PV plant in Cáceres, Extremadura (Spain). Construction had started in January 2020. The €225m project, which is financially backed by the European Investment Bank and Deutsche Bank, has been built without the need for public subsidies thanks to a unique financial power purchase agreement (PPA), which ensures that the project receives stable and guaranteed income during the first 10 years of its operation.

India commissions the Kochi-Mangalore gas pipeline

The government of India has officially inaugurated the 450 km Kochi-Mangalore gas pipeline. The gas pipeline, which has a transportation capacity of 12 mcm/d (4.4 bcm/year), was launched in 2009 and was initially due to be commissioned in 2014 at an estimated cost of INR29.2bn (US$399m). Due to local opposition delaying the project, its cost increased to INR57.5bn (US$786m). It was built by the state-owned gas processing and distribution group GAIL.

Pattern Energy starts building its 1 GW Western Spirit wind project (US)

Pattern Energy has reached financial close and launched construction for the 1,050 MW Western Spirit wind project and the Western Spirit transmission line, located in the Guadalupe, Lincoln and Torrance Counties in New Mexico (United States). In addition, Pattern Energy has selected GE Renewable Energy to supply total of 377 wind turbines ranging from 2.3 to 2.8 MW in size for the wind power project. The Western Spirit transmission line is being developed jointly between Pattern Energy and the New Mexico Renewable Energy Transmission Authority (RETA).
