The Netherlands’ first SDE++ round receives €6.4bn subsidy applications

As part of the Sustainable Energy and Climate Transition Incentive Scheme (SDE++), the Netherlands has received 4,112 subsidy applications for projects that contribute to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the country. A total of €6.4bn in subsidies was requested, including €2.4bn for 4,195 MW of solar PV projects, €2.1bn for carbon capture and storage (CCS) project, €618m for electric boilers and €355m for heat pumps, exceeding the available budget of €5bn. The Netherlands Enterprise Agency will assess the submitted applications.

Scotland (UK) opens its 10 GW ScotWind offshore wind leasing round

The Crown Estate Scotland (United Kingdom) has opened the application window for registered developers to submit projects for the ScotWind leasing round, targeting up to 10 GW of offshore wind projects. The closing date for submitting applications is 31 March 2021. In October 2020, the Scottish government raised its target for offshore wind power capacity by 2030 from 8 GW to 11 GW.

New York State (US) selects Equinor and BP for 2.5 GW offshore wind projects

The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) (United States) has selected the Equinor – BP partnership to provide 2,490 MW of power as part of its second offshore wind solicitation. Equinor’s proposal includes two projects, namely 1,260 MW Empire Wind 2 and 1,230 MW Beacon Wind 1. Empire Wind is located southeast of Long Island and is being developed in two phases with a potential total installed capacity of more than 2 GW (816 MW first phase already selected in a NYSERDA solicitation).

Denmark pre-selects 6 bidders for the 0.8-1 GW Thor offshore wind project

The Danish Energy Agency has pre-qualified a total of six consortia and companies to participate in the tender for the Thor offshore wind project, with a minimum capacity of 800-1000 MW. The selected applicants are Ørsted, RWE (Thor Wind Farm project subsidiary), Vattenfall, Swan Wind (owned by Eneco and European Energy), a consortium of Total and Iberdrola, and a consortium of SSE and Thor OFW (owned by Copenhagen Infrastructure IV and Andel Holding).

New Fortress Energy, a US gas-to-power company, has entered into a definitive agreement to buy the Brazilian gas company Hygo Energy Transition for US$2.18bn.

NPD forecasts Norway’s oil output to rise by 22% between 2020 and 2025

According to the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate (NPD), Norway’s crude oil production rose by nearly 20% in 2020 to 1.69 mb/d in 2020 and this growing trend should continue over the next few years: crude oil production should increase to 1.76 mb/d in 2021 and 2.07 mb/d in 2025 (+22%), as major oilfields Sverdrup and Castberg will progressively enter production. Total liquids production should increase by more than 19% between 2020 (2 mboe/d) and 2025 (2.37 mb/d). Norway’s natural gas output is expected to increase by 0.5% in 2021 and by 5% over the 2021-2025 period.

Germany grants permit for Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline construction

The German Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH) has issued a permit for the completion of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline in Germany’s Economic Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). The total length of the section is about 30 km. The €9.5bn (US$11bn) Nord Stream 2 project is aimed at doubling the throughput of the current Nord Stream route between Vyborg (Russia) and Greifswald (Germany), from 55 bcm/year to 110 bcm/year. It is developed by Gazprom (50%), Uniper, Shell, OMV, Wintershall and Engie (10% each) and so far, more than 2,300 km of the 2,460 km-long pipeline have been laid.

Orlen signs connection deal for a 1.2 GW offshore wind project (Poland)

The Polish energy group Orlen has signed a grid connection agreement for its 1.2 GW Baltic Power offshore wind project with the Polish power transmission system operator (TSO) PSE. The project will be located approximately 23 kilometres off the coast of Łeba and Choczewo. Earlier in January 2021, PSE signed grid connection deals with PGE for the 1,498 MW Elektrownia Wiatrowa Baltica-2 offshore wind plant and RWE for the 350 MW FEW Baltic II offshore wind project.

Total-Hanwha Group’s JV will develop 1.6 GW of US solar-storage projects

Total has signed an agreement with 174 Power Global, a fully-owned subsidiary of the Hanwha Group, to create a 50/50 joint venture in the United States. The new company will develop 12 utility-scale solar and energy storage projects with a combined capacity of 1.6 GW in Texas, Nevada, Oregon, Wyoming and Virginia. The first solar-storage project entered production in 2020, and the remainder will be commissioned between 2022 and 2024.

EDP shuts down the 1.2 GW Sines coal-fired power plant in Portugal

EDP has closed the 1.2 GW (4×298 MW) Sines coal-fired power plant in Portugal, which was commissioned between 1985 and 1989 and used to supply up to one third of the power consumption in Portugal. The power plant only accounted for 4% of the electricity supply in 2020.
