The Crown Estate (UK) awards leases for 8 GW of offshore wind projects

The UK Crown Estate has selected six proposed new offshore wind projects in the waters around England and Wales (United Kingdom), which represents just under 8 GW of potential new offshore wind capacity. A consortium of BP and EnBW were selected for two major leases of 1,500 MW each, both located in the Irish Sea (off the coast of Barrow-In-Furness, West of Morecambe Bay, and off the Northern Welsh Coast, North East of Anglesey).

Germany will invest €6bn in 2021 in energy efficiency measures

Germany has made available €6bn in 2021 to finance energy efficiency measures, most notably programmes to modernise existing buildings with better insulation and more efficient heating systems. The "Federal Funding for Efficient Buildings" (BEG) will also simplify funding applications and processing. Germany expects subsidy-related CO2 savings to double to 14 Mt of CO2 by 2030 (compared with previous studies) and tax subsidies for building renovation to add 3 Mt in CO2 savings.

Russia plans to tender 500 MW of solar capacity in June 2021

The Russian government intends to tender 500 MW of solar capacity in 2021. The auction, which is managed by the trading system administrator JSC ATS, is likely to take place in June 2021. The authorities are planning to endorse a new program to deploy a total of 7 GW of solar and wind capacity by 2035.

Solar accounts for less than 1% of Russia’s installed capacity, with 1 GW (2019). Currently, around 300 MW of solar projects are in various phases of development.

Petrobras could sell the 333 kb/d LAM refinery (Brazil) to Mubadala

Petrobras has concluded the final round of the binding phase of the sale process of the 333,000 bbl/d Landulpho Alves Refinery (RLAM) and associated logistic assets in Bahia (Brazil). Mubadala Capital, which is the financial investment arm of Mubadala Investment Company, an investment vehicle owned by the government of Abu Dhabi (United Arab Emirates), presented the best final offer in an amount of US$1.65bn. Petrobras will need the approval of the relevant corporate bodies to sign the purchase and sale agreement.

Amazon signs PPA with Eneco-Shell offshore wind project in the Netherlands

Eneco and Shell have signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) with Amazon to provide 380 MW of electricity from the Hollandske Kust Noord offshore wind project, which is jointly built by the two companies. Shell will provide 250 MW and Eneco will provide 130 MW, starting in 2024.

Enel’s global power generation declined by 10% in 2020

Enel has released its 2020 preliminary results, posting a 19% fall in revenues to €65bn and a stable EBITDA at €17.9bn. The company produced a total of 207 TWh of electricity (-9.6%), including 42.5 TWh in Italy (-9.4%) and 165 TWh in the rest of the world (-9.7%). It distributed 485 TWh on its networks (-4.5%), including 214 TWh in Italy (-6.2%) and 271 TWh overseas (-3.1%), and sold 298 TWh (-7.4%), including 90 TWh in Italy (-7.5%) and 208 TWh overseas (-7.3%).

Algeria’s gas exports to Italy rose by 12% in 2020 to 14.8 bcm

According to the Algerian national oil and gas company Sonatrach, Algeria exported 14.8 bcm of natural gas to Italy (+12%), despite an 8% decline in Italian gas exports, accounting for 22% of Italy’s natural gas imports. Algeria also exported 9.6 bcm to Spain (part of which was re-exported to Portugal). Spain’s natural gas imports decreased by more than 13% to 32.6 bcm and Algeria accounted for 29% of those imports. These volumes of gas were delivered by pipeline through Medgaz and GME to Spain, via GEM to Italy and by Sonatrach’s fleet of LNG carriers.

Renewables should account for 42% of the US power mix in 2050

According to the US Energy Information Administration (EIA), the share of renewables in the US electricity generation mix will double from 21% in 2020 to 42% in 2050, with wind and solar accounting for most of that growth. Nuclear and coal-fired generation should decrease and the natural gas-fired generation share remains relatively constant. By 2030, renewables should collectively surpass natural gas to be the predominant source of power generation in the United States.

Canada’s Hydro Québec signs a 30-year PPA for a 200 MW wind project

Hydro Québec has signed a 30-year contract to purchase the electricity that will be produced by the 200 MW Apuiat wind power plant, which is owned by the Innu communities and Boralex in Québec (Canada). The project will be built on the traditional territory (Nitassinan) of the Uashat mak Mani-utenam First Nation and on public lands in the City of Port-Cartier in the Côte-Nord Region.
