Ukraine approves feed-in-tariff reductions for wind and solar

The Ukrainian parliament has approved a draft law on feed-in-tariff (FiTs) reductions for renewable power generation. FiTs will be cut by 15% for solar parks and by 7.5% for wind parks commissioned between 2015 and 2019 and by 2.5% for both types of projects commissioned as of 1 January 2020.

Japan identifies 10 additional offshore wind areas

The Japanese Ministries of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) have identified 10 areas as potentially suitable for offshore wind development. Four areas are more advanced: Aomori Prefecture off the Sea of Japan (north side); Aomori Prefecture off the Sea of Japan (south side); Happo Town, Akita Prefecture and Off Noshiro City; Off Eshima, Saikai City, Nagasaki Prefecture.

India’s Adani Transmission acquires a 650 km transmission network

Adani Transmission Ltd (ATL) has signed an agreement with Kalpataru Power Transmission Ltd (KPTL) to buy Alipurduar Transmission, which operates transmission lines aggregating to around 650 km in West Bengal and Bihar (eastern India) for INR12.9bn (US$172m). With this acquisition, the cumulative network of ATL will reach more than 15,400 km, out of which more than 12,200 km (including this asset) is operational and more than 3,200 km is under various stages of execution.

Brazil plans to reduce its stake in Eletrobras to 49%

The Brazilian government plans to reduce its stake in the power utility Eletrobras from 63% to 49% through a share offering, in a bid to raise more than BRL14bn (US$2.6bn). In April 2020, the Brazilian government postponed the privatisation of Eletrobras from October 2020 to the second quarter of 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic. Brazil initially expected to privatise around BRL150bn (US$28bn) in assets during 2020 focusing on energy assets from Eletrobras, with the objective to reduce the numbers of companies held by the government from 624 (at end-2019) to 300 by end-2020.

Fortum sells its district heating business in Järvenpää (Finland) for €375m

Fortum has accepted an agreement to sell its district heating business in the Järvenpää-Tuusula area in Finland to a consortium consisting of Vantaa Energy, Infranode, and Keva for €375m. The transaction, which is subject to customary closing conditions, is expected to be completed in the third quarter of 2020. In 2019, Fortum produced approximately 330 GWh of heat and approximately 90 GWh of power in Järvenpää. Since 2019, Fortum has been divesting from district heating businesses in Finland, Poland and Estonia.

Poland awards 90% of the Yamal gas pipeline capacity for 2020-2021

Exporters have booked around 90% of the capacity of the Polish section of the 33 bcm/year Yamal-Europe gas pipeline from Russia to Europe for the year between 1 October 2020 and 30 September 2021, through auctions held by the Polish gas transmission system operator Gaz-System. Gaz-System will offer the remaining 10% to customers through short-term auctions (quarterly, monthly, and per day auctions). The gas transit agreement between the Russian gas supplier Gazprom and Gaz-System that was concluded in 1996 expired in May 2020.

Dominion Energy, Duke Energy cancel Atlantic Coast gas pipeline (US)

Dominion Energy and Duke Energy have cancelled the Atlantic Coast gas pipeline project in the United States, due to ongoing delays and increasing costs threatening the economic viability of the project. The 1.5 bcf/d (15.5 bcm/year) Atlantic Coast gas pipeline project was developed by a joint venture of Dominion Atlantic Coast Pipeline (Dominion Resources, 48%), Duke Energy ACP (40%), Piedmont NACP Company (a subsidiary of Duke Energy, 7%) and Maple Enterprise Holdings (an affiliate of Southern Company, 5%).

Sweden accelerates on the 500 MW Sydkustens Vind offshore wind project

The 500 MW Sydkustens Vind offshore wind project in the Øresund region in southern Sweden has entered its development phase, and physical studies of the seabed and project are about to start. The project is developed by the Norwegian renewable company Magnora and the Swedish company Kustvind; Magnora will gradually acquire up to 50% in Kustvind based on a detailed milestone plan. Project partners have accelerated the project by 10 months. Once operational, it is expected to generate around 2 TWh/year of electricity.

Denmark awards updated permits to Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline project

The Danish Energy Agency has awarded an updated permit for the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline project, allowing the Nord Stream 2 project company to use pipe-laying vessels with anchors to complete the 55 bcm/year Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline in Danish waters. In October 2019, the Danish Energy Agency granted a permit to Nord Stream 2 to build a gas pipeline south-east of Bornholm, proposed in May 2019. It preferred this path based on environmental and safety considerations. Pipe-laying vessels with anchors were not included in the construction permit.

Simply Blue Energy plans a 1 GW floating offshore wind project in Ireland

Simply Blue Energy has applied to the Irish Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage to start gathering site data for the 1 GW Emerald floating offshore wind project off County Cork (Ireland). The company will start with a pre-commercial array of 100 MW and will be later expanded to 1 GW.
