Pakistan plans to privatise 10 power distribution companies

The Privatisation Commission (PC) of Pakistan plans to privatise 10 power distribution companies, including electricity supply companies of Faisalabad, Gujranwala, Hyderabad, Islamabad, Lahore, Multan, Peshawar, Quetta, Sukkur and tribal areas. The PC expects the private sector to make power distribution companies more competitive, to improve their services and to solve power supply issues.

India launches its second commercial coal auction for 67 blocks

The government of India has launched its second auction of commercial coal mines, offering 67 fully and partially explored blocks spread across 6 states – Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh. 23 blocks are under Coal Mines (Special Provisions) Act and 44 under Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act.

Indonesia intends to reach net-zero emissions in 2070

Indonesia plans to submit its second Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) in April 2021. The country will maintain the target stated in its first NDC, which is to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 29% by 2030 (compared with a business as usual scenario) with its own efforts, and by 41% with international support.

The Supreme Court of Canada upholds the federal carbon pricing law

The Supreme Court of Canada has ruled the federal carbon pricing law is constitutional. The carbon pricing scheme was challenged by the provinces of Alberta, Saskatchewan and Ontario; the courts of appeal for Saskatchewan and Ontario found the Act constitutional, while the Alberta Court of Appeal found it unconstitutional.

Engie sells a 74% stake in its 813 MW solar portfolio in India

Edelweiss Infrastructure Yield Plus (EIYP) has completed the acquisition of a 74% stake in the Indian solar portfolio of Engie, which holds a total capacity of 813 MW in India. EIYP and Engie signed a strategic partnership in January 2021. The two companies aim to add up to 2 GW solar assets in India over next couple of years. The projects will be developed by Engie.

Northland Power completes Polish offshore wind partnership with PKN Orlen

NP Baltic Wind, an affiliate of the Canadian company Northland Power, has completed the acquisition of a 49% stake in PKN Orlen’s 1.2 GW offshore wind project in the Polish Baltic Sea. The transaction was approved by the Polish Office of Competition and Consumer Protection (UOKiK) earlier in March 2021. The Baltic Power project has secured its location permit, filed its environmental permit and signed its grid connection agreement. Construction should start in 2023 and commercial operations are planned in 2026.

UK greenhouse gas emissions fell by 8.9% in 2020

According to provisional figures from the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS), the United Kingdom’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions fell by 8.9% to 414 MtCO2eq in 2020, which is 49% below their 1990 level. Net emissions of CO2, which accounted for 79% of total UK GHG emissions, decreased by 10.7% in 2020 to 326.1 MtCO2 (46% below their 1990 level).

Czechia opens preliminary round for Dukovany-5 nuclear project

The Czech Industry Ministry has invited France’s EDF, Russia’s Rosatom, South Korea’s KHNP and Westinghouse of the United States to pre-qualify for a tender to build a new 1.2 GW unit at the Dukovany nuclear power plant. The country excluded China General Nuclear Power (CGNPC) due to security concerns. The authorities are expected to take a final decision on who will be allowed to bid by the end of 2021.

Finland grants fuel loading permit for Olkiluoto-3 nuclear project

The Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority (STUK) of Finland has granted a fuel loading permit to Teollisuuden Voima Oyj (TVO) for the 1,650 MW Olkiluoto 3 nuclear power plant unit (OL3) in Eurajoki (western Finland).

Cheniere Energy allowed to start 3rd train at Corpus Christi LNG (US)

The US Federal Energy Commission has approved Cheniere Energy’s request to place the third train of its 13.5 Mt/year Corpus Christi liquefaction and export terminal project in Texas (United States) into commercial operation. The first 4.5 Mt/year LNG train started production in November 2018, the second train in June 2019, and the third train is expected in the second half of 2021.
