South Korean companies could buy the Mintia-Deva thermal power plant (Romania)

A South Korean consortium, which includes Hyundai Power Systems, AKEDA and BKB, intends to buy the Mintia-Deva coal-fired power plant (3×180 MW) in Romania and to invest to develop biogas and solar projects on the site.

Forecasts

Denmark’s crude oil production expected to rise by 42% over 2021-2025

The Danish Energy Agency forecasts that Denmark’s oil production will rise after 2022, to average 97,000 bbl/d in 2025 (+42% over its 2021 level). Crude oil production is estimated to have declined from around 100,000 bbl/d in 2019 to 79,000 bbl/d in 2020 and around 68,000 bbl/d in 2021, due to lower production in some of the larger fields.

Siemens Energy will build a 1.1 GW LNG-to-power plant in Taiwan

Siemens Energy in partnership with CTCI Corporation will build a 1.1 GW gas-fired power plant in Taiwan for the independent power producer Sun Ba Power Corporation. The project will be fired with regasified LNG. Sun Ba Power Corporation is an affiliate of JERA.

Shell plans a 1.4 GW floating offshore wind project in South Korea

Shell has partnered with CoensHexicon to create a joint venture to develop and operate a 1.4 GW floating wind project off the south-east coast of South Korea. The MunmuBaram joint venture is 80% owned by Shell and 20% by CoensHexicon. The MunmuBaram offshore wind project would be developed in phases and could generate up to 4.65 TWh/year once fully operational. Partners plan to apply for an Electricity Business License (EBL) in September 2021.

Estonia and Latvia study grid connections for a 1 GW offshore wind project

The Estonian power transmission system operator (TSO) Elering and its Latvian counterpart AST have jointly ordered a survey on the potential onshore route for the offshore electricity connection to be created between Estonia and Latvia. The two countries plan to jointly develop a 700 MW – 1 GW offshore wind project, tThe Elwind offshore wind project, which could be completed by 2030 and should generate around 3 TWh/year, delivering electricity to both Estonia and Latvia.

JRE partners with wpd for a 300 MW offshore wind project in Japan

Japan Renewable Energy (JRE) and Germany’s wpd have agreed to create a joint venture to develop the 300 MW Saikai Enoshima offshore wind project in coastal Enoshima, Saikai City, Nagasaki Prefecture (Japan). JRE is currently carrying out a series of studies, including environmental impact assessments, and discussing with the local community and other stakeholders. The project area was identified as potentially suitable for offshore wind development by the Japanese Ministries of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) in July 2020.

Turkmenistan commissions a 432 MW gas-fired power plant

The Turkmen state-owned power utility Turkmenenergo has commissioned a new gas-fired power unit with a capacity of 432 MW at the Lebap plant in the Lebap region of Turkmenistan. The project was developed in cooperation with Sumitomo Corporation and Mitsubishi Power (Japan) and Rönesans Holding (Turkey) and financed by the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JIBC) through a loan agreement with Vnesheconombank of Turkmenistan. The Lebap plant comprises three other gas-fired units totalling 144 MW.

Gas accounts for nearly 100% of Turkmenistan’s installed capacity, with 7.1 GW.

Uzbekistan launches a tender for 500 MW of solar capacity

The National Grid of Uzbekistan has initiated an auction for the construction of several solar power plants in the Namangan, Bukhara and Khorezm regions; the solar projects will have a combined capacity of 500 MW and will be developed by independent power producers (IPPs) on a build–own–operate–transfer (BOOT) basis. National Grid of Uzbekistan is holding a pre-qualification phase for interested developers runs until 29 November 2021.

Algeria plans to tender 1 GW of solar projects before end-2021

Algeria plans to release a call for tenders for the construction of solar projects with a total capacity of 1,000 MW. The country was previously expected to initiate the auction process between June and July 2021. The tender will be open to projects planned with foreign financing and the authorities may possibly offer dollar-linked power purchase agreements (PPAs). The country will impose domestic requirements for cables, modules, and mounting structures. Algeria aims to auction another 1 GW/year of renewable capacity in 2022, 2023 and 2024.
